Default Does anyone know of any effective bird repellents?

I got a metal carport last summer and it is great, but.

I did not have problems with birds last year, but it was installed in the late summer when birds were not nesting. A couple weeks ago, that changed and some small birds are trying to build nests in the corners and I have seen some that appear to be evaluating some other places.

I like birds, but I hate bird shiit.

I bought a couple plastic hawks and have been moving them around the area, with minimal effect. They seem to be keeping most of the birds away from the area, but do not seem to have any effect on the ones that have already started building nests.

Every chance I get, I have sprayed down the areas with a garden hose. This does not seem to be working. I keep trying, thinking they might get annoyed enough to relocate, but I have been doing for a couple weeks so I doubt it is going to work.

Eaves are 10' high so it is hard to get to them to clean them out.

Any suggestions on what I can do to get rid of the birds that are already trying to nest and keep others from trying?

Rope was hanging up in my locked garage and never realized the nest was even there! Must have locked momma out when she was trying to build the nest! Don't know how to repel them......used to see spikes set on the edges of buildings to keep pigeons from landing.?

Blocking any possible nesting areas with chicken wire, wood, is what I do.

Yep, block up the likely places is all that has worked for me. Also helps putting up some bird houses to give them a choice .. there are only so many mating pairs in the area.

But, they will find a place this time of year.

Down here in SWFL., local restaurants with outdoor seating string up fishing line around the perimeter of the seating area, seems to work well.

Thanks for the replies.

Unless just the sight of them will keep/chase the birds away, I don't think the cats will work in my situation.

Most of the places they are nesting are 10+ feet in the air with no way for a cat to climb up. I know cats can jump pretty high, but I think 10' is out of the range of the average cat.

I had birds building a nest on top of the light outside of the garage door. I finally stopped it using the heavy shipping tape with straight pins sticking through it pointy end up. I turned the top of that light into a prickly pair cactus. They quit building the nest there.

Yes, they work for certain types of birds.

Hang a plastic owl in your yard. Although this will have some effect, the crows will soon get wise to the fact that it's fake [source: Cornell].

Just keep knocking the nests down as they build them. I've done that to the barn swallows in my small barn for the last few years and they are getting the idea. When I was younger we had a large barn that had dozens of nesting pairs of barn swallows. One day I went out with a BB gun, and for as long as we lived there, there was never a bird problem in that barn again.

There is a plastic owl perched on top of the post near my septic pump. It was there when we bought the place last November. Birds sit on top of it's head all the time, Robins, Cardinals, Starlings, and a crow are the ones I've seen. Also squirrels or it could be the same squirrel.

If you like those little fruit pies seen in Wal-Mart, hang the pie tins on a string and place them around the carport. The breeze will make the move and in turn will scare off the birds. I've done that and movement works to scare them off.

Or stuff foam from a seat cushion or bed mattress in the spots they're trying to build a nest in. I also did that between the light fixture and the metal roof of my carport. They can't get into the crevasses between the metal roof and the fixture to roost at night or build a next. It's worked great for the past 4 years. No bird poop on the chairs and table under the light.

As soon as they start building a nest, spray it and the area around it with ammonia. I wouldn't do it if they have eggs or chicks.
