Part numbers for 1969 4sp shifter assembly?
Hi all,
I'm getting confused with what parts I need for my 69 Judge. I just would like to be sure I'm buying the right parts (original numbers, i have aftermarket now) if single items or complete assembly. I see shifter handles and shifter bases? on ebay. what should those numbers be? I see I can get reproduction linkage from inline tube. At a recent Auto swap meet I saw a shifter handle, pretty sure correct, but bolted to aftermarket base. Just need to know exactly what to look for. I am replying here, because I have back issues of High Performance Pontiac back at home;
Several years ago HPP did a Hurst shifter article that was over two issues; I do not know if the shifter body part number is listed, but I am confident that the shifter stick number is listed.

I've got a date coded shifter sitting at home I can look at with the numbers. I went through all this a few years ago scraping together everything. One thing to be aware of if you're starting from scratch, the back lock linkage and hardware is definitely different for 69. The "69-72" parts that Ames/inline sell are 70-72 design. it fits on 69 but it's different. I was missing the pivot bolt and ended up having to make one because they're hens teeth. I made a couple at the time and might still have an extra I didn't sell, but unless you've got a 69 back lock to match with it, you won't need it if you end up with the repop 70-72 style.

5324 is the 68/9 bucket seat handle number. IIRC you have to pull the handle from the body to see it.

yep, the chrome hurst handle is a 5324, stamped on the bottom of the arm where it snaps into the shifter.
Shifter assembly body number is 3138 and there's a date code up the side of it if you're really worried about numbers. Note the back lock linkage and pivot bolt, different than the pictures of the repops which are based on the 70-72 design. you can't mix hardware, if you use the 70-72 linkage then you must use the 70-72 pivot bolt. original virgin shifters have the embossed rubber molded into the ends of the levers. Most were ripped out and replaced with the hurst insert bushings to clean the sloppiness out of the setup. problem is you need to drill the holes open for the bushings so there's no going back. I'm on the fence about mine, these are still there and not ripped up so I'll cross the bridge once I get this all together and see how sloppy it feels. |

1969 GTO Hurst factory 4 speed shifter; Muncie transmission
Muncie 4 speed: 1969 Pontiac A body cars, some of the steering column lock out parts are one year only parts. Specifically the long stud (which holds the 3-4 lever in place and the pivot for the steering column lockout which goes on top of that stud).
