So far, I'd say half of the movies mentioned don't fit that criteria.

Dr Strangelove (Or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love The Bomb)
George C Scott describing how a B52 comes in on a bombing run. "If the pilot's good, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that thing in so low, oh it's a sight to see. You wouldn't expect it with a big ol' plane like a '52, but varrrooom! The jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!" For an actor that played serious roles he was absolutely hilarious as the Statregic Air Command General Or the line from Peter Sellers; "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!" I know, off topic, but great movie

How about a Burt Reynolds film called "Stick". It was a good movie, but I don't know anyone that has seen it. It flopped at the box office and even on video. Candice Bergen was in it and she looked mighty fine.

Thunder in Carolina (1960), Rory Calhoun and Alan Hale (The Skipper on Gilligans Island). Also in the movie was Connie Hines (Carol Post, Wilbur Post's wife on Mr. Ed)
Thunder Road (1958), with James Mitchum, James Mitchum also sang the theme song in the movie. |

The one I remember most was called: The Killer Shrews. That scared the hell out of me. There was another one that I don't remember so vividly, except for the title, and the fact that my sisters considered it the benchmark for a scary movie for a long time. It was called: The Shuttered Room |

The Last Ride, starring a 69 Judge, the 21st century GTO, and Dennis Hopper.
Duel, taken from the book, 52 Miles To Terror. Starred Dennis Weaver and the guy with the sunglasses.... You can't forget the soulless 281 series Peterbilt with the 50s Fruehauf tanker. The California Kid, starred Martin Sheen and Vic Morrow (Rat Patrol on TV). 34 Ford flamed hot rod, and another murderous Exner series 57 Plymouth Fury, related to the 58 Plymouth Fury, Christine.

About any movie with Sterling Hayden - Asphalt Jungle, Johnny Guitar, and The Killing are his most popular but perhaps unknown to some these days. Check out the mostly forgotten Naked Alibi for an example of a good crime noir.
Also read his book the Wanderer if you think you're life has been full... it will make you feel like you haven't done a thing. |

I watched this on WGN with it's AKA title Hard Driver.
I seem to remember they lifted the engine sound for Jeff Bridges' Mustang from Bullit. Loved the hydraulic operated railroad iron in the demolision derby car. |

That was Robert Mitchum. Robert's little brother Jim also played the little brother in the movie.

67drake may have heard of this one and I don't think it would be considered 'unknown' anymore, at least not for movie buffs.
The Incident, with Tony Musante, Martin Sheen and Beau Bridges. It was Martin Sheen's first movie. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Another one that has similar cult status is The Hill, starring Sean Connery. I had never heard of it until about 20 years ago. It's not as absorbing as The Incident though. I thought it was overly long. |

Someone above mentioned "The Others." That was another I'd forgotten about but really liked it when I first saw it. Also "Falling Down" was great. "Snatch" is another good one that not many people know about.

The Magic Christian - released in December 1969 - starring Peter Sellers, Raquel Welch and Ringo Starr and music composed by Paul McCartney (among others).
"Billionaire Sir Guy Grand (Peter Sellers) thinks nothing of throwing his endless stream of money away. He adopts a street person (Ringo Starr), christens him Youngman Grand and sets about trying to illustrate to his new heir how virtually everyone in the world can be bought. He pays a traffic cop to eat a ticket, pays the Oxford crew team to sabotage a race and finally fills a vat with feces and money, inviting one and all to keep the latter if they don't mind putting up with the former." Ended up reading the book after seeing the movie. Did a term paper comparing the two. The trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaLMsZU6NaY |

Very Bad Things, and Serial Mom are both great. Most of the movies I watch are pre 1940, so I guess for the average guy they are all obscure and unknown.
