Those terms would be a deal breaker to most everybody - near or far. Vaguely i was thinking it was in the Salisbury or Kannapolis, NC area. Or maybe i just imagined that somehow. Anyway - i wouldn't have walked across the street if i had to pay before viewing / confirming it. That is asking for way too much gullibility . imo |

A 71 TA was parked in 73 due to leaky seal, otherwise a nice car.
Car still had new-ish car value in 73. Engine was carefully stored inside. Extensive documentation was carefully put away. Car was left outside for decades to rot. Then in 2019 someone has a magic moment where they realize the car has value. Did I miss anything?

You missed the part about the engine being painted black and the air cleaner and shaker scoop not being carefully stored inside...

that is probably the WORST aircleaner base i have ever seen!
ta least a more "pedestrian" aircleaner can be used as a donor to recreate it!

Having no title for NY buyers is a non issue for 1972 and older vehicles. NY uses a transferrable registration for vehicles of this vintage, and getting one is pretty easy. Proof of insurance, and a pencil rubbing of the VIN is all that is required along with a couple of forms.

I'm thinking, IF the story is true, the air cleaner base and shaker were put in the trunk when the engine was pulled and that's why they're rusted away. I'd bet there's no trunk pan anymore. The owners manuals look like they may have been in a plastic bag in the glove compartment so the humidity rusted the staples but they're in otherwise good condition (the sides we see in pic). The current bid being at 8 large leads me to think there's a body swap in this cars future. Use the engine and VIN numbers then part out the rest of the car. The options and lack of AC make it a desirable performance car.

It's pretty much at or above the sum of the parts in the bidding.
And like Hobi used to say - only 4 rivets away from a rust free shell |

I have a drivetrain in my daily right now, that I pulled from a less than two year old wrecked car; I bought my car (a 2009 model) brand new in February 2010, and in April, I bought a wrecked 2009 that had already been off the road for a good month and a half. I knew the owner, and through a series of poor choices, he found himself uninsured with a wreck to deal with, all on a car he was still making payments on. The drivetrain had roughly 19k miles on it when I bought it, and five years later I swapped it into my car (around the time I finally gave up on the idea of rebuilding the car)... still running strong (knocks on wood) which is surprising for how hard the guy was known to have driven the car! I can only guess that in the early 1970's a daily driver Trans Am was something akin to my daily (go ahead, laugh, I understand); A car that is driven hard, and often customized right out of the gate... I knew people who had fully customized their Cobalt on a rattle can budget, often to make the car look like less than it was for some street cred. I can only guess that many musclecars were done the same way. Then again, it seems to me that within the first two years, more than half of these cars were written off... What I am surprised about though, is the survival rate of the older cars... but maybe that's because they're not engineered to squish like a pop can in anything resembling an accident. For those who care, this type of Cobalt was for a decade, the fastest production FWD car sold in North America according to the likes of Car & Driver: LINK The Cobalt made the record in 2008, and it was only beaten in 2018 (yes, someone at C&D needs to check their math). The car that broke it's record, while running with 46 additional horsepower (306hp vs 260hp), has also beaten alot of other records... and shamed much higher dollar cars. Just some food for thought.

Let's face it. These cars did not hold up well with daily use in all forms of weather. The acrylic lacquer paint was poor at best for protection, the metal quality was suspect, and sealing methods and overall assembly quality were so-so.
So they did not age gracefully with poor care, as many were dealt with.

I'd say it's well bought.
As a parts car you're ahead. With engine and fenders alone. As a complete restoration you have a well documented 71 TA matching 4 speed at 8.5k
