Default What cfm head needed

Engine is a 462ci on alky, .630 solid roller. Shifting and trapping around 6500 rpm. An online calculator for figuring needed cfm gave me a # of 296cfm for 100% VE. , and 378cfm for 127.5 % VE. What other info could I use to point me in the right direction for getting the head I need?. Thanks

Cubic inch and rpm will tell you the cross sectional area and valve size needed. Cfm is a result from those two

Bracket car, not looking for every last bit of HP, just as much as I can without sacrificing consistancy.

I would say that a good 330-340 cfm head on a 462 with that cam( depending on the rest of the cam spec ) would make plenty of power for bracket racing.

Volumetric efficiency numbers above 100% come by way of both Intake and exh flow and wave tuning, ram tuning and Exh scavenging tuning , not just Intake flow amounts.

A typical off the shelf round port E head with bowl blend job flowing some 310 cfm@28" will with a race compression ratio of 12.5 to 1 or better should be able to make darn close to 700 hp if Camed right.

If your TA weighs for example some 3400 lbs with you in it then by your current ET numbers your making 550 hp at the flywheel right now.

He is way backed up, there was a thread on this in the street section. There are quite a few ports as good or better that will respond quicker.

Said he was 5 months out. That is not all so bad considering. One of his basic 340-350cfm E heads should more than get done what he is after. Not too expensive either.

You might want to talk to Dave Wilcox. He can get you wherever you want to be with a Pontiac.

I have a set of E heads that were done by SD and I picked up 5 tenths with them, over my iron #62 heads, on a 463. That engine was around 600 HP, and I ran it for seven years, over a thousand passes, so I don’t have anything bad to say about Dave @ SD, however; when I wanted info on my heads, my phone calls & emails went unanswered....he must have been moving at the time, or maybe another reason??? I don’t know why, but I never did make contact when I tried.

My next engine, the one in my signature was done by CVMS, and Dave Wilcox did the heads and crankshaft on my 468. If I recall correctly it was $800 for the head work Dave did. I asked for a couple tenths, and got that and a little more. My 468 makes about 675 HP.

I had a set of HP’s done by Dave recently. When I was at his shop I saw some pretty impressive stuff. I don’t think Dave Wilcox will let you down when it comes to head porting.

6-8 weeks. Not too bad considering. And he still does iron heads too if anyone is interested.
