Still remeber running out and getting a 56K modem when AOL supported it. want to say that was a little before 97, but I am not positive.

This thread prompted to look at my join date. 10 days away from an 18 year anniversary. I'd like to think I matured slightly in that time, so I've altered my profile picture to be my car instead of a phone cranking puppet. (I said slightly) I just made Chief Pontiyaker, I figure I should start acting like one.

I didn't have ANYTHING! I had to log-in from work, during my lunch break ;-) It was probably close to two years later, before I had internet access at the house.

28.8K???

I don't remember what year it was, guessing somewhere about 1980. We were running our company on a Radio Shack TRS-80 model 3. Dow Jones announced a service where, if you programmed your own communications protocol (they gave parameters) you could access a "real time" news agency, with stock quotes, current weather, and movie reviews. I think my daughter would have broken the bank had I allowed her unlimited access to the movie reviews.

We had a 300 baud dial-up modem at the time.

300 baud. That had to be brutal. But in 1980, Possibly amazing! I work in the security industry & we still use old Hayes 1200 baud smart modems for phone line programming some control panels. I thought there was a 28.8 I do remember 14.4 & 36.6 for sure.

Getting a little off topic, but still interesting

Ragtop - the 300 baud was fairly soon replaced with a 600 baud, which was the maximum that could be transmitted over normal telephone lines at the time.

About the same time, I was working as a systems programmer (then day job) working for the state. My job covered database, and telecommunications. We paid big bucks for a "conditioned" 1200 baud line.

Basically, "batch" communications.

A part of my past that I have almost forgotten. We had to write our own communications programs, as we had Burroughs mainframe and Datapoint terminals. I will NEVER forget the time the conditioned phone line "blinked", reset, and the double buffering feature of the program lost one buffer. Had to rewrite to check that the received data was the same as the sent data. Slowed things down by 1/2, but the batch jobs were done overnight, and still finished OK.

First time signing in was in 2004. Changed ISPs so I could sign in again until 2006. Can’t believe I’ve been on here 14 years....

Your join date is wrong then, It shows you as joining in Jan 2002.

I joined a month before you in December 2001.

Could be, I was just going off the date listed in the upper right corner. Dec 2001
Not sure where else to look it up. Is there a member list somewhere?

If you look at the post you just made #50, it says Jan 2002.
But that is splitting hairs, but you made me check the day a couple of times.
Do not know where you are coming up with a different month and a different year.

Wow, thats really weird, I see December 2001.

Your right, it doesn't matter, but how could that be different between our computers? What does your date say on your computer? I see December 2001 on yours as well.

Before the Ames switch and related problems with logging onto the site, my join date always showed as Dec. 1969. After all of that was cleared up, it showed (to me) as Jan. 1970. I always considered that as some sort of site "correction". Ironically about the same time the C.H. password changed from 1969 to 1970.
In the spirit of full disclosure (legal jargon for the truth), in early 2000 I learned of PY and was drawn here to check it out by all of the bad-mouthing posted by a few Classical Pontiac puritans. The irritating and childish postings of Glenn and his cheerleaders motivated me to dump C.P. and hang out here.

So, like it or not, here I am. Those of you from that era know what became of Glenn and C.P.

When I started at AT&T in February 1988, I was working Digital Data Services. Our customers were either government or business, no residential. Everything we had was a subrate circuit of 56kB or lower. We still had 2400 baud circuits in service, mostly to military officers who were old school and of the mindset "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", which is why they were reluctant to upgrade. Back then, 4800 baud was the fastest speed that was supported over twisted pair copper, so if you had a 9600 or 56k and it ran slow, you were hosed.

odds are this was modified in the background;

I may be mistaken, but didn't the site crash some time before 2004, and not all profiles were recovered?
Maybe it was another site, but I thought this happened to this site, and my current profile was actually from the second time I joined.

I used to frequent classicalpontiac back in the day. Lots of good knowledge was dropped there. Once I discovered PY in 2003 I havent looked back. Honestly I liked the people on CP better but their forum left much to be desired in terms of user experience.

I was frequent on CP before here as well;
it was members on CP that sent me here, and even then I lurked a while before signing up.
