I've heard criticism of trickle chargers because they mask weak batteries and when you take your next drive off the charger they have gotten stuck with a dead battery. I never owned one so I don't know that first hand. I start my car every few weeks at the minimum (mostly because I miss the fun).

Buy a cheap used load tester and keep it on hand. You can get them at almost any swap meet or garage sale for between $5.00 and $75.00. I have a hand held unit I bought for $10.00 but something like a VAT-40 that is on wheels can be found for $25.00 to $50.00. That will tell you if a battery is good or junk.
