Nice looking 73. A friend I use to race with all the time has a 73 chevelle SS, it think your Olds would have taken him. Lol
Dennis I have always thought the 350 Rally’s were some of the best looking Olds cars. If I ever get tired of the 455 in my Chevelle it would work great in an Air Boat. With a W30 cam... |

That 73 really was very nice.
That was me holding the 1st Place trophy from the big annual show at Rockingham Speedway. It drew in really fine cars and getting ANY trophy there was a big deal. At that show, 2nd Place in his class went to a frame-off restored 73 SS Chevelle Black/Silver with 350 & Automatic. Chevelle owner was PISSED about 2nd Place. The 442 was highly detailed, but not frame-off. He confronted my friend, and Jim told him he would race him around the Rockingham track 1 lap - or out on the street. Winner takes BOTH trophies. Chevelle guy went back to his car and left. haha It won a ton of trophies in 2 years. Even best paint one time. Presidents Choice at Southeast Regional Oldsmobile Nationals (out of the whole showfield) Was an extremely rare car. Oldsmobile people flipped out on it everywhere he went - it was Cool. Was well tuned and ran Good |

The auto trans W-30 455 and the little brother W-31 350 used the smaller 308* camshaft - and Crane sold a "Fireball" cam that was a very close replacement. The W-30 stick cars got the 328* version, and no power brakes.
In the W-31 350, with its 4.057 x 3.385 bore and stroke, the shift points were as high as you dared to run it. and it got a very specific harmonic balancer that's Big Money today. They're rev happy little monsters without a lot of effort. One of the members of an Olds forum I used to be on - was a GM assembly plant manager during the musclecar years.... told us that the advertised HP of many of the musclecars was the curb weight divided by 10. So it weighs 3700#? 370hp! And the engine did that number but it wasn't anywhere near the peak output in many cases. Yes, theyre all 100hp engines... somewhere on the curve.

Thanks for clearing that up Steve C.
I was unaware of the bigger cam. I looked up the link you left and it appears the smaller cam was used in the 350 W31 engine, while the larger one was used in the 455 W30 engine. ...interesting. Everything I've ever read, heard, seen on the subject always said both engines used the same cam. Sounds like that may not have necessarily been the case. A quick question - Do you know if the first cam seen in that link (JM-18-20) is the '64 Spec 442 cam from the 330 engine? Ponchy

The Pontiac split lift profile works goos in Olds engines. A top renown builder and Carb specialist s decades experience saying the Pontiac cam profile is superior.

The only 455 engines I am aware of to receive the same cam as the w31 350 (308/308) cam were the 68-69 Hurst Olds cars which were 390 hp. One of the McClarens here is built up like a Hurst Olds 455. But has C heads instead of D’s. It has a noticeable ruff idle. The w33 390 hp police 455 had the smaller #400165 285/287 cam like the w30 autos in 70. Lots and lots of Olds 455s get refitted with the 308/308 and call it the W30 cam. It seems like it is a popular cam for a 455 Olds like the 041 type grinds in a Pontiac 455.
I used some single pattern cams similar to the Olds cams in Pontiacs for some dirt track racing. My opinion is the most of Olds 455 engines need the extra duration on the exhaust. More so than many Pontiacs. The cheater version of the w30 had about 20 more degrees on the exhaust than the intake. That is a big split. E/I ratio on the Olds heads is lower than most Pontiac heads. Here is a Hurst Olds car test. You can year the ruff idle right away. It ran good, best et was a low 13 @ 107 mph. Cool old video. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kuGjbKUYADs Last edited by Jay S; 05-27-2020 at 06:35 PM. Reason: Edit |
