sprung trunk lid on 65 Tempest
yesterday backed car out of garage with trunk lid closed but not latched when a 40 m,p,h, wind came up and blew it open. sprung hinges now lid rubs on top and won't latch. Do i take lid off and pry down on hinge ? Thanks in advance!!

Trunk hinges are tricky to repair. The very slightest bend in a hinge can create havoc if you try to straighten them. First be sure that the lid inner structure isn't warped at the mounting point, and not a hinge problem.
When this type of thing happens, it closes/tightens the curve of the hinge slightly. This happens in the center of the curve, the weak point. To reverse that, you need to block the hinge from downward movement in that curve while you put closing pressure on the trunk lid. That can mean using a section of 2x4 upright between the trunk floor and hinge to open the curved hinge. Doing this does two things. It moves the lid further rearward, and it raises the rear edge of the lid from the body. If you can locate a body man over 50 years of age, he can probably help you do this. Good luck! |
