Starter replacement gone bad:
Okay,
I changed plugs, cap, rotor and points. Basic tune up and seems fine. I also changed starter since the one in the car is old and tired. I have shimmed it the way the old one was and tried many other combos. When I bump the car the index returns great but when I start the car it does not return? I have changed the shims and even added to a point of no contact. Also I have switched solenoids from another starter to try and trouble shoot. Nothing helps and hate to buy another starter at 70 plus bucks a crack. The car and ignition was great before and find it hard to believe I have a switch issue. Any help would be appreciated as to what to look for. Thanks |

I'd make sure the wiring on the solenoid is correct and wires not twisted to contact something it shouldn't.
Take a pic of the solenoid end with wires and post it?

Does the starter stay running when this happens?
What happens when the engine fires up? And might want to click that link John posted Clay |

Yeah, thanks for replies. I need to drop the starter (again) to get a picture. I had bought it from Napa and thinking of ordering one from Car Quest to try again.
I dont see a link Clay ? |

Oh no. another one. Maybe something related to 2020. Concentrated solar flares forming into fine focal point locations causing havoc on solenoid electro magnets.

We've seen the small post in the end in bakelite on the solenoid twist when tightened
Been quite a few years but I remember that it was on a 400 4-speed 1970 GTO that had a starter with worn-out brushes. A s-l-o-w cranker.
Changed out the starter for a 'rebuilt' (back when they actually changed out EVERYTHING as part of the rebuilding process), replaced the shims and snugged everything down, hooked up the battery and fired it up. Starter stayed engaged and kept spinning....... Turned the key off. Starter kept spinning the engine over........so I grabbed a wrench and disconnected the battery cable. Pulled the starter back off and checked it on the ground. Worked fine (?). I got looking at it closely and noticed that one of the small terminals was just a little loose. Evidently it was twisting slightly when I tightened down the nut that held the wiring on and something inside was making an incorrect circuit when the solenoid energized. I disassembled the solenoid end-cap and re-assembled it with everything matching the old, known good solenoid, and making sure that the small terminals were tightened correctly. It worked fine after that for probably five years. Good luck! |

It's the 'blue word' starter in his post

It isn't blue for me, it's black, just like the rest of the text.
