Th350
Pulled out of a 73, no vin, no markings, expect this transmission symbol. Has anyone ever seen this before? Service replacement?

Teri, It looks like it says Buick Motor Division - Flint with the Tri-shield background...so a replacement(?)...though I've never noticed that cast on a trans before.

I have seen it back in the 70's-80s when I worked at AAMCO but not often.

This is possibly a Th350-C . They have a flat back torque converter, but can be put in older cars with a standard converter.
I think '81 was first year for this. |

Yup, was installed with stock converter to function as a 350 stock trans. I am betting its a 81-87 vintage, probably behind a low horsepower car when new. If it works. Its worth something.

The TH350 was designed and PRODUCED as a joint effort by Chevrolet Motor Division and Buick Motor Division as a replacement for the Chevy Powerglide and the Buick Super Turbine (although it co-existed with its 2 speed predecessors at least for a few years).
Buick built the TH350 at the Flint, Mich "home plant" and Chevy built the TH350 at a few of their own Plants. I don't know if there was any rhyme or reason as to whether Pontiac was supplied by Chevy or Buick but assuming this one was original to the '73 it came out of, I'd guess that BOTH Divs. supplied TH350s to PMD and consequently a given Pontiac received a TH350 without regard to which Div. built it. Likely, Chevy produced far more TH350s at the multiple Plants than Buick did from a single Plant. And perhaps the bulk of Buick produced TH350s were installed in Buicks produced at Flint so that a Flint built TH350 would be much less common in a Pontiac than the identical unit supplied by Chevy. I know nothing about the Buick identifier on the case, it may or may not have been marked on the Buick produced TH350 main case throughout the entire production run or perhaps only appears during a certain time frame. Regardless, I suspect, again assuming the trans is original to the Pontiac it came out of, that the identifier simply shows that this trans, or at least the main case, was produced at the Buick facility in Flint and not at all unusual in that regard. If I'm correct, I'd have to think Buick guys would be more familiar with the Buick identifier. It does seem odd that it is not VIN stamped and lacks other part no. markings. So perhaps it is not original to the Pontiac. But I doubt the Buick identifier was solely placed on main cases reserved for Service Replacement. I'm not familiar with how and where the VIN would have been placed on a '73 TH350 by Pontiac. But you might look more thoroughly on the trans for any other markings that might shed additional light on the origin of this trans. |

Absolutely is a 350. I have been in the transmission business since 1975 and I have owned a transmission shop since 1984. Can you tell me what it is? I know because I rebuild them.

The switch looks to be the '73 TCS switch that was part of the Emissions Control System.
ladytata, have you looked closely at the governor cover? Identifying info was stamped on the TH350 governor cover in '73 per the Service Manual. |
