Can a swap my non limited slip 3:23 to a limit slip posi by just changing the carrier
Hi everyone. I'm in the process of wanting to change out my non limited slip carrier in my 1965 GTO Convertible to a posi (limited slip) unit. My original gears are 3:23. Can I simply change out the carrier with a posi unit? do I need to change out the gear set. Would like to keep the 3:23 gears they are in great shape. Just want to change out to a posi unit. My axle housing casting number is 9779822. Everything I've been able to find out is there is I would need to change out the gear set as well and probably have to go to 3:36 ratio. If I need to do this will this unit fit in my axle housing? Any help would be appreciated.

Why not do it yourself? Read the Installation Instructions down at the bottom of the page.

If your posi carrier is for the 2.93-3.08-3.23, you can install your gears with no issues. If you change to a 3.36-3.55-3.90-4.33, you will need the carrier for those ratios. Plenty of 3.23 Safe-T-Tracks were produced. The 3.23, IMO, is just about ideal for a street driven car, though. If I had that ratio, I would keep it.

We did a Dana 44 years ago & just swapped the carrier. The gear pattern was spot on! But you gotta check.

If you get a posi carrier for a 3.23 gear set, then it bolts straight in.

here is a project I have always wanted to do to my 71 with 3:55 gears. Summit gets about $450.00-$500.00 for the PowerTrax unit I see.
Are you guys happy with the units you installed from Powertrax? It does not look like a difficult project. |

The PowerTrax is a great unit, had one in my 66 GTO. Don't know why more are not in use. Indestructible, no clutches or cones to wear out.
They ONLY fit a non-posi centre, so great way to convert a non P to a P. |

Auburn have new posi units for 3.23:1 gears in P 10-bolt rear-ends.
Easy swap, remember to measure the backlash on three spots around the driven gear before you pull the non-posi and use this backlash with the new posi. |

Just a FYI that Jegs has the 3.23 Auburn HP Differential (5420114) for $389.99.
I stepped up to Auburn's Pro Series version (542099) for $487.99 on sale awhile back.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate everyone's feedback. Good stuff! I'm going to go with the Auburn unit and keep my 3:36 ring and pinion gears. Can't wait to burn some rubber come spring.

Quick story: Put a 3.70 gear into our 65 GTO with 3.23 posi rear end. Used an aluminum spacer on the ring gear to space it over.
Used grade 8 bolts from a hardware store. Younger brother sheared off all the bolds and exploded the rear end. It sat under a tree and was still there when the house was sold. Replaced it with a junk yard rear end. This was many years ago. End of story. Somehow I built up another 3.23 posi for the car as pictured in avatar. Now original again. |

Make sure and get the 5420113 Auburn for 3.36 and above, not the 5420114 unit we are discussing for 3.23 and below.

Let us know how it works out. Our two '64's have 3.23 open rear ends. Would really like limited slip.

I bought a set of used 3.23 gears from 62 BV (from a 64 I believe) and installed them with the Auburn posi carrier from Ron's Machining Service (https://www.ronsmachiningservice.net/) and the Yukon gear and axle overhaul/install kit from Summit (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/YGA-14085). No noise, works great, full posi. I removed a 3.55 geared open carrier when replacing. Changed the trans speedo gear and I am enjoying it. |
