Last off the line is quite a claim! I recall the last cars built were possibly November of '69. Is that when the car was built? Do you have copies of all that documentation and the PHS invoice? |

The problem is that today everyone takes what they get, so that's what they are used to.
Back then, car dealers and manufacturers were like Burger King...…. Have It Your Way! |

In the trunk on delivery 3.90 Posi and 4.10 Posi third members Isky E-2 camshaft and set of solid lifters. Next to the firewall data plate and just to the rt. of it is the oval S/O Tag ( special order tag) The car was built in Michigan because of the hand built NASCAR engine and was railed out to A.E. England Pontiac, Hollywood Ca. Not a South Gate car. A.E. England was totally unawares of the order until the car got there. The car was ordered out of the Los Angeles Zone office for my Dad. Apparently there was quite a bit of pushback for a car with this trim level and as you know Ventura came for 60 and 61 which turned itself into Pontiac Grand Prix in 62. My dad raced it 59-60 in AS/A, I started racing it in 1965 in FS/A until 68, I sold it in Dec 1968 and in 1978 I decided to locate it and restore it but found out it had been shredded three months before I started looking. The factory accessories option book for 1966 had one of my favorite advertising lines of all time in it. It said "An option list as long as your arm and twice as hairy"! I love that. They weren't kidding either.

Yeah but the 8 lug wheels option on the 66 GTO never happened.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere years ago where a couple of those wheels escaped into the wild and were in private hands, but I could be wrong.

When my wagon was ordered, (Lester Goodson Pontiac out of Houston TX. Built in the Arlington Plant, code R) I'm guessing that wasn't one of the dealers, because he seemed to get everything else on it, just not the HO. Do you still have any paperwork on that wagon that would have the VIN? I'd be curious as to what the PHS would say on it.

Cars for race teams where pulled off assembly line and sent to another facility for customizing.
Still a factory car though.

Sorry. I didn't know what a "lug" was back then. The block eventually broke the three center main caps between the inner and outer bolts so I scrapped it.

Or - how bout the fact that they gave the engine to him as a retirement gift? I didn't even get an email when I retired. K

Few thoughts from Pontiac Dealership, Chevy Dealership, and Assy Plant in Norwood.
On interiors. Order sheets at Dealerships had a " check box" and in the 70's was bottom right. This allows to order " AGAINST" the recommended colors and contrasts. This same box was also used to go Against the Factory Exterior color contrasts including verring off the road on stripe colors. Some things happened in middle of production with NO changes to an order form. One is shoulder belts. The DOT. mandated laws, or rules by Calendar years, not Model years. In many GM cars shoulder straps did Not show till mandatory in Jan 1. 1968. One thing not mentioned yet is "BRASS HAT" cars. There were many loaded cars built through the 60's and 70's as zone cars for zone managers to take to Dealerships to show off options. I set up a few such cars for zone managers at the receiving dealership. Customers would and could order all sorts of things if the dealership was in a great financial situation with GM. All this was to make money and sell cars. NOT to build a legacy. We sold k-5 Blazers and Jimmy's WITHOUT a passenger seat, rubber mats, No back seat, and only a spare steel rim mounted out back. . Also Pontiac was working with ASC since in the early 70' s. I was never surprised to see a 73 or newer car with a sunroof. Factory? Well it came in on a transport with other new ones. Pontiac management and the Dealer sales guys would do almost Anything, or try to order almost Anything to sell cars. Being a dealer that ordered and received State car orders, I saw a lot of " COPO" cars and trucks. That is a book on itself of oddities like Luxury Lemans with vinyl seats and rubber mat.. and baby moon's. |

I have a Friend with a '69 that is NEWER than his buddies 1970 ..
They made 2010 Pontiacs in 2009. In the USA.. Then went back and made more 2009 in same model !! Yes there are 2009 Pontiacs that are NEWER than 2010 models. You could order a 2006- 2009 Solstice with a hard top and big brakes... |
