69 GTO Convertible rear mounted antenna options
My '69 project car has a front fender antenna but I really like the look of radio antennas in the rear of these cars.
I don't want to spend the $600 or so for a rebuilt original electric antenna. Are there any decent alternatives? I don't even need it to be electric, I just want it to look good. I see Ames has an electric but the bezel is black plastic and I don't think that would look good at all. Or, am I best off not converting and just buy a new reproduction setup keep it up front?

Thanks guys.
I guess it just doesn't make sense to drill the hole in the rear if I don't put an original back there. Maybe they will reproduce an original at some point. Not crazy about the idea of going to in-windshield antenna so that leaves me the options of going with a stealth or buying a front reproduction. I'll want to decide that soon as I'm doing bodywork now and will need to decide to weld up the hole in the fender or leave it there. One plus of going with a stealth is that if they ever do reproduce the rear antenna, I could then consider it since there would be no fender hole to deal with.

They reproduce these manual antennas for '63-64 Impalas.
If I had a rear hole already but no original antenna unit, I might consider one of these repros for my GTO but I'm not sure it would be wise to drill a new hole for one.

I like the look of the rear antennas on the '69's with the way they slope back. When I bought my '69 convertible back in '97 the OE power antenna was long gone and the hole welded up. It had no antenna so I installed an invisible unit.
Years later I finally redrilled the hole and mounted an aftermarket power unit since all the wiring was in place. I like the look of them, up or down, but unlike the original, mine retracts fully but that does make it easier to get your car cover on. If I become as adventurous as you Roger and one day start my resto, I'll still be keeping the rear antenna. Last edited by Andretti; 02-23-2021 at 12:27 PM. |

I have owned my 69 GTO convertible for 50 years. I always hated the
antenna on the front fender because A: it looked bad and B: It made noise at highway speeds with the top down. For many years I went with a windshield for a 70 GTO convertible that had the hidden antenna in it. I really liked that setup, but I wound up buying an nos power antenna for the car and installed it about 20 years ago........I love the way that looks on the car. |

Makes noise with the top down? Now I'm leaning to welding up the hole on the fender. Then either go the stealth mode or consider a non-correct rear antenna.

Full-size early mid 70’s fords and merc’s fit pretty well, but they go all the way down unlike the factory gto ones that had about a 6” fixed mast section. These Ford units are the right length to anchor to the wheel tub and you can use the repop correct looking nut and upper bezel.
