Check for numbers on that piece. If it's not 1:1 your speedo will be off without the box.
Not sure, but thinking that 4 speed cars that came with 3.08 rear gears were 1:1 on the cable. My car came with the box. Orignal owner told me he ordered the car with a lower rear gear than 3.23. What it was is a whole nother story. Clay |

If someone has aftermarket dual exhaust - the longer 80" cable might be a better option to give more play-room to route away from exhaust.
The 80" might be better regardless, to make the loop over into the passenger side of tail shaft a less stressful bend. New cables need to have the cable itself removed from the sheath, and greased with synthetic or moly grease. Sparingly - but thorough. Most advise to keep grease away from the last 6 inches at the speedometer end of cable. |

my 78 has 3.42 & didnt have the box & 2 piece cable when i bought it, so likely was replaced with the 1 piece long cable. will have to test the speedo with GPS now but it always seemed to be close to accurate when driving in traffic or on the highway with other cars. |

my car also has headers & bigger exhaust with H pipe, the long 1 piece cable seems to fit & work great. also i have always used a graphite lube for speedo cabless, thought i read or heard back in the day that grease was a bad thing on speed cables?? |

Schools change - randomly
Graphite not the best - most say now its one of the least preferred - along with lithium. Can't go wrong with a synthetic or moly - sparingly. A lot of folks install them right out of the box as-is. Some still use lithium and swear by it At $13 a pop - you can't get hurt too bad no matter what you do, or don't do. But one day those will be gone Grease is only a problem when it dries/hardens/gums inside the sheath after long term (and over-applied). Lithium and low grades will do that over time. Especially on a car that sits more than its driven. Or if it is sloppily applied all the way to the end and works it way inside the speedometer head (bad). Synthetic and Moly for the long haul |

thanks for the info on cable grease... i will try a moly/synthetic grease in the future. my cars & many classics do sit for a long time or get lower miles <1000/year so drying can be an issue.
the graphite was an older thing from the 70s-80s so im sure there are better options today, just need to be sure its the right grease, synthetics werent around back then. |

With a 270* loop at the Tranny end - i would want something to ease the friction/wear between cable and sheath.
If you have graphite handy and like it - use it. If you have synthetic or moly on hand - definitely use it. But would probably rather go dry , than to use lithium or base grease on these fair weather cars that sit so much. The 79 400 4spd cars were all 3.23 whether A/C or Non A/C Mine was A/C I don't know what was being done with the various 77 78 79 cars with various 305 Chevy option / 301 P option , in regard to axles. |

Incredible they had one in stock at your local Azone
And the price was a double bonus . Part Numbers for the 80" Cable Pioneer = CA-3001 ATP = Y-815 funny story - Pioneer actually offers the lower cable that i can't find for my Van. But they made it backwards/sideways. The Female collar at Trans is supposed to be 7/8" - they made it 5/8" The Male fitting on other end is supposed to be 5/8" - they made it 7/8" dammit |

Yes, agreed. It obviously must fit a 'million' GM cars because they would not be stocking it otherwise. O'Reily's has it too for about the same money.
Sadly, I had to replace it again after only a few weeks as I fried the new one as it touched the headers. So, I have more experience than I need with them. And - make sure they do not touch the exhaust. Everything seems harder to do on these TAs over working on my GTOs but, I love them both. Quote:

The F body dash is INFINITELY easier to deal with than a 1969-72 A body dash. I had a 1972 LeMans Sport Conv. and the dash was awful to service.

Having pulled dozens of each, i will respectfully disagree. Would rather service a 69-72 GTO dash over the firebird any day. So much easier in a lot of ways. Starting with the radio ad moving from there.

The tach in my '72 LeMans was hell to remove and replace. One of the many reasons it's gone. Not one of Pontiacs better efforts.

My '79 TA/TA 4spd car had the two piece cable and little gear box connecting them. I replaced it with a one piece cable and the speedo was way off!
