Computer Anti-Virus and security software
I've been using Norton Internet Security for the last five or six years. Normally I don't think much about the software unless there is a glitch. I had a minor issue this summer and the Norton person spent more time trying to upsell on Lifelock than they did fixing my problem.
I'm curious about what type of antivirus and internet security the rest of you guys run. I'm thinking about trying Bitdefender, but I'm seeing it can be a resource hog. Mike |

I use Mirosoft Security Essentials (free). Had a chat with my favourite computer shop. He said the minor increase in security for one that costs money does not justify the cost. At one time i did use Kapersky. Didn't notice much difference in protection. However, it would not allow me on about half of the sites that require passwords, particularly online banking. So to do any on line banking and maybe some on line shopping I had to turn off the anti-virus software. Kind of defeats the purpose of it.

You don't need anything but Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows defender, and Malware bytes for an occasional scan ... assuming you observe basic computer hygiene habits. Don't click on links in emails you don't recognize, don't allow HTML emails, don't spend time at porn sites, don't open attachments from pretty much anyone except family, and even then only things you expect them to send. Use Ctrl/Alt/Del to bring up task manage and exit your browser at ANY website that opens a window that doesn't want to close.
I've had one bad virus in 20 years, and it was a bad one ... the "Conficker" virus ... and I know I got it from the bootleg software sites I visit ... in my case, the price to be paid for my nefarious actions. Probably 90% of the viruses a person is exposed to is due to their own actions, clicking on something that should not be clicked or spending too much time on less than reputable websites. Your computer is like your ...ehhh... wang, don't put it anywhere you don't trust |

Norton is a HEAVY use program. It uses a lot of resources to run.
I use Webroot as firewall etc., and total file clean up etc. yes I pay for them, and yes they work, zero fails in a decade. |

I've been using Panda Free and it's pretty good. But the only way to keep ransom ware out of you computer is to buy a good antivirus software program... and that was from the tech guys at my local Microsoft store. Anything else that's Free won't do it. I did use Hitman Pro for awhile, but that started deleting things I didn't want deleted.
One way to stay a bit safer online is to use inPrivate Browsing. "InPrivate Browsing helps prevent Internet Explorer from storing data about your browsing session. This includes cookies, temporary Internet files, history, and other data. Toolbars and extensions are disabled by default." When using it you will have to sign in with your user name and password for all the websites you belong to.
