A dog never lets you down
I put my 14 year old black lab, Ace, down this morning. This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. I’ve been in tears on and off since yesterday. He fell asleep with his head in my lap,on the floor of the vets office. Groaning lightly, as he always does when I rub his ears. Man is that hard. I had to keep fighting the urge to just give him another week, or month, or whatever. He was just losing control of his functions, and unsteady as all heck. The last two weeks he went down hill fast.
So I’m sitting here thinking today. I lost my brother unexpectedly about 3 months ago, and an uncle 2 days ago, but never shed a tear in those cases. Sad, shocking, but not nearly as painful as putting my dog down. Why? I’ve come to the conclusion that my dog never let me down. I don’t want to be around people all the time, the dog, I didn’t mind. People I don’t trust a lot of times, but my dog never burned me. He wanted to be with me no matter how bad things got for me. RIP Ace

I'm so sorry to hear about that. I had to put down my 10 year old Rottweiler last February. His name was Bas and he was a fantastic dog. That was the 7th time I've had to do that and I still don't know how I get through it. It's the hardest thing I have ever had to do. My last dog was sudden and unexpected but I've been in the same situation you described with other dogs. I'm sure you did what was best for him. When you have big dog that can't get up anymore there's not much you can do. It sounds like you gave him a good life. That's all you can do. Hang in there.

Many here have been in the same place you are today, I can't count how many great dogs I've had to do the same to. No matter how many times you've been through it, it never gets any easier.
It hurts your heart because you see them every day of their lives, and they never do anything, but be so happy to see you. I guess that's the reason, they're known as, mans best friend, they've earned the title, no one gave it to them. When you have to go through this inevitable time you swear you never want to again. Most people go through their mourning, and within a year start the process again. Prayers sent to help with this incredibly hard time you're in. Your pal now has his dignity back, and no pain. Stay strong. |

He looks like he was a good boy and a faithful companion. When you look up ‘unconditional love’ there’s a picture of a dog there in the dictionary . We lost our black lab Sam a few years back. She was 14 too. I cried like a baby. My condolences.

Very sorry for your loss. I've had to put people down and I've had to put dogs down......for me, putting down the dogs was more difficult.

We've had many dogs over the years, and I always shed a tear when they go down. I came to the conclusion a long time ago:
We don't deserve dogs. Condolences.

I've had several dogs over the years but the last one was the only one that I had to have killed. There is no other way to put it. He was my best friend, saved me from coyotes and my constant companion. It's been years but I think of him everyday. I have another dog now who I care as much about. I'm an old man now and sometimes I hope I go first so I don't have to go through that again.

Tough stuff. I know it hurts but you wouldn’t trade the memories to relieve the pain! Makes me think of my Great Dane Duke. 13 years following me to the bathroom to wait for me to come out and laying down in my driveway while I was in the garage. How he would circle three times before he laid down in his big bed next to ours. I think God gave us dogs to learn what unconditional love is. Hang in there man.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I feel your sorrow. I put my pup my furry son down 3 years ago and am still missing him. My friends say hurry and get another pup to take his place but I can’t seem to move on. He kept me grounded no matter what kind of day and mood I was in he always fixed me. Humans can’t do that continuously 100% of the time.

I am so very sorry for your loss Sir,
They are such a big part of our families & give us unconditional love throughout their lives. I just lost my boy Duke on Tuesday @ 13 years old & back in June I lost my little girl Caledonia @ 17 years old. I cried like a little baby for both. Since I never had human kids, they are/were my Furry Kids. At one point & for 8 years total I had all 4 together (2 dogs & 2 cats) now I am down to one older dog (Sprinkles). I lost the first of the 4 (Kitty) Shadow back in 2017 I share your pain & sense of emptiness, soon you will look back fondly at the memories you made with ACE! If I could suggest...Anything you have left over I.E. food, supplies, etc you may consider donating it to the local animal shelter. They are always looking for help & when the time comes please consider a shelter dog or cat. There are so many with hearts just as big, waiting to be great companions! God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...closed.614419/ DUKE & CALEDONIA
