Talking with my buddy last night we started talking about the fastest engine swap either of us have done. My best from pulling car in to shop and driving it out was 8 hrs. The only help was taking off hood and putting it back on (1969 gto) this was back in the early 90’s when we still did a lot of street racing. The swap included pulling engine changing heads, cam, lifters, oil pump, chain, ect to new shortblock and installing. Keep in mind this was a time period we didn’t care about engine being painted nice or any of that it was all about the go. So let’s hear your best times.

On my dirt track cars, pulling engine, swap heads, and cam to another shortblock and reinstalling in chassis on raceday about 6 hours. That's with a lift, and a chainfall and some pretty good wrenches working on it with me.
In a sprint car I've seen an engine swapped in under 15 minutes in the pits. but that's with quick disconnects, and a whole lotta people that know exactly what they're doing performing the swap. |

Swapped engines between 2 early 80s K5 Blazers. Parked em nose to nose in one of the bays of our local volunteer fire department. Had em both switched and driving within 12 hrs.
Don’t ask why….

Three hours to drop a complete 455 HO in my 80 TA. The old engine was already out and I had two competent friends helping. One guy under the car and one on each side. When we boasted about getting it done in three hours another friend said "that means you do it too often".

About the same degree of time. 8 hours give or take. Stock for stock in an ancient Chevy pickup belonging to a friend. However, we did end up painting it a chevy orange color in the end.

OK ... not a swap ... but back when I was 20 years old in the Navy I would go to the "hobby shop" (on base multibay garage for enlisted people) and pull my engine out to ... wait for it ... clean it. I'd take it out, leave it on the hoist, roll it to the side, clean it up, usually replace a few things, put it back in. Hood was on four pins so it came off quick. Typically a full afternoon ... five hours or so.

I'm not sure on an exact time. But one day we put an engine in my buddies '65 Chevelle. Someone (not me) put half of the rear main seal in backwards. So we pulled it out, fixed it, and put it back in same day. Not anymore! lol

1973 Firebird 350. Brian and I showed up to pull the engine and they said it could not be done due to two bolts that could not be reached. Within the hour it was on an engine stand.
The group went about cleaning the engine and the engine compartment and Brian and I went home. We came back the next morning and put the engine back in the car and we made it to a photoshoot at Papago mountain before noon. And they said it could not be done. |

I'm usually in the "one year" to "two years" timeframe.

About 25 years ago, I pulled the motor out of my 65 Catalina on a Friday evening. Changed the leaky rear main, back and running in the car Sunday evening.

About 13-14hrs, give or take with tuning. I had a mildly modified 327 69 Camaro for some not too serious race fun during Fri/Sat night cruising. Long story short, the local "Buddy" Repperton in his 440 Dart finally pissed me and my friend off enough one Friday, that we stayed up and swapped it out with a freshly rebuilt 383 I had. On the way to my garage, we grabbed a tow truck from the Mobil station I worked at and used boom as our engine hoist. Later that night "Buddy" got his surprise.
I wish I had that kind of energy again lol

Pulling the motor back out of Catalina this fall. Rear main seal, adding KRE D ports, iron Qjet manifold. Upgrading fuel lines, finish making shifter porch, welding up solid from underneath. Giving myself a 1 year deadline!

Working at a Chevy dealership as a line Tech in the late seventies. 1978 Caprice wagon under warranty came in around 08:30 AM for thrust bearing knock. Pulled the engine, flipped it over, pulled the timing cover annd timing set, and replaced the crankshaft and bearings working it in the block with rod bolts covered with short pieces of fuel hose. Buttoned it up and had it ready for the owner by mid-afternoon.

I used to "hot rod" with a buddy who had a Monte Carlo with 350 and th350. On a Saturday morning we started with a bare block AND bare transmission case, by that evening we were racing it. I believe it was running by about 7 PM. Dang, I can't imagine doing 1/2 that much work now. (And I'll admit, I stcrewed up someting in the trans, it had no reverse that night...but we didn't need it.)
