That must have been brutal. My father also worked at Gillette (south boston) and when I finally got through to him he told me they were evacuating the Pru and he was heading home.

I was somewhere like Chelmsford where the vendor was and I worked until 4 or so. I remember driving home on 495 to Taunton and no plane in the sky, everyone on the road looking somber and feeling like WTF just happened.

Ironically, I live about 8 minutes to Sarasota Bradenton Airport and 6 minutes to Booker Elementary school which is where Air Force 1 and President Bush was that day.

One of my older maternal male cousins was training police officers in Kosovo when the attacks took place. A Marine sergeant came to his office to inform my cousin that he was supposed to meet an Air Force C-21A( Lear 35) for transportation to Frankfurt, Germany then a flight back to the U.S.. My cousin had worked with John O’Neill during his tenure with the FBI Counterterrorism task force in NYC. When he arrived back in NYC, he was whisked to a briefing with the current director of the task force. My cousin was in his office, which overlooked what had been World Trade Center Plaza, when the FBI director at the time, Louis Frehe called him and ordered him to D.C. After he arrived at FBI headquarters in D.C. Frehe briefed my cousin on what was taking place with the military response to 9/11 and what his duty would be. He( my cousin) was flown back to NYC to say goodbye to his wife and to get his shots current. That evening, he was flown back to Frankfurt, Germany where he boarded a military transport to Uzbekistan, where he would join up with a Special Forces team for infiltration into Afghanistan to work with the Northern Alliance fighters. He spent the next year “in country” before returning home. He still won’t talk about 9/11, but he knew from the start it was Al Qaeda.

i met some former northern alliance fighters at bagram in 2003. they sat us down on some mats, served us green tea, and we watched CNN footage of the US assault on Bagram from two years prior while they yelled "hoooah" at the TV screen. I will never forget that.
