Any next-gen battery carries the risk of spontaneous fire if they have a defect in the manufacturing process, or they are mistreated, or even old.

Same reason they force landed a plane last week because somebody's old notebook started smoking.

When cars just had a road draft tube instead of a PCV system, all that blow by just emptied out on the ground.

In the case of the Chevy Volt the gasoline engine will fire at a predetermined intervals in order to keep things fresh and lubed up.

Do not see anyone, except for me, that has ever done the job.
I am sure that there are some who are quietly out there.

Fill out a application and show that you can do a better job on designing a new product.

Then do it for 40 years like I did. SIMPLE. Everyone get to have an OPINION.

If you hit a HOME RUN on everything you do you must be playing Slow Pitch softball
on a Mixed (Girls and Guys) team.

Is really an option they catch on fire or a fact?

Anything mechanical can have issues.
Yes, they catch on fire. Have seen quite a few posts of race cars & parts catching fire
over the years and burning down a garage. Maybe time to take race cars off the road.

Safety Hazard.

Again lots of opinions, minimal experience.

I can change my mind any time I want on whether to post based on any new info.

Believe there are only a few like Bart or Stuart that can make rules. So the government has issues with parts (recent helo crash) (B2 grounding) etc.

Poor choice of words, Grandam, do not think any manufacturer would have an "Option"
related to creating a fire on a vehicle.

Your beloved Pontiacs have been OUT OF PRODUCTION for years. For a reason.

EVs catching fire is just a small part of their problems. Its the big picture you need to look at when it comes to EVs. Theyre an option,,,,not the answer. Their limitations and expense are big factors if you have nothing to drive but EVs. And theyre far from being environmentally great. I didnt know that pontiac engines/cars arent being built anymore because they were polluters. lol

Today's paper: Some Ram Heavy Duty trucks could overheat and cause a fire.

There are 6.7L DIESEL trucks (341,000) of them.
So the electric vehicles are not any worse than a conventional DIESEL Internal Combustion Engine as far as fires go.

Facts not BS (but of course some do not want to read facts).
How many years, has Diesel Vehicles been offered for sale????????????????

Just saying

Like I said the EV fire thing is a small part of the big problem picture but at this point the whole thing is just beating a dead horse .If you cant see the limitations problem with EV then you should sell your ICE vehicles and buy all EV. No you say? Why not? Not ready yet?

In a previous post, I said give it 30 years before Electric has resolved enough problems to sell I lot of vehicles.
BUT gas and diesel engines have been around a lot longer and are still having a lot of issues.
Be honest on that deal.

Oops Forgot that this thread is a EV and Engineer bashing thread.

Thank You. Actually 39.75 since you brought it up. But I rounded.
You made me laugh on that one. You missed your calling.

Come on guys, knock it off or this discussion will get closed. It's managed to remain (mostly) civil for a long time, we don't need a bunch of petty bickering.

Stolen from a source that has political material....

EV Vehicles: It’s Much Worse Than You Think

EV vehicles are not all that if we’re trying to reduce our carbon footprint en masse by 2030. A lightweight vehicle takes ten years to recoup its losses. Trucks are much worse. If you want to electrify transport in America, you need to double the grid size, which would be challenging. What we’ve done in the last 150 years — double that in seven.

That doesn’t make it impossible for the right amount of money, but if you want to do it by 2030, here’s what makes EV vehicles impossible as a final solution.

You need three times the amount of copper, four times the amount of chromium, four times as much aluminum, ten times as much nickel, and eighteen times as much graphite. Never in human history have we ever doubled our production of any industrial material in any industrial period – ever.

Now we want to do it for fourteen materials simultaneously! And we’re losing Russian output, the EV solution looks a lot worse.

Russia is the top producer for about half of this stuff, and we’re going to lose the processing capacity in China. So, this cannot happen with today’s technology.

The processing is all done in China with coal so the carbon footprint is not being factored into most people’s carbon assessments.

It must be done according to a plan which he describes in the clip. The geography must be considered according to the available materials. EVs don’t make the cut.

There’s a lot more. Watch:
