The timing chain cover of the '60 engine will allow you to attach the front engine mount. No problem.

He asked about putting a '55 timing cover on a '60 block Larry. My answer is correct for that. Your answer is correct for putting the whole '60 engine in the '55 using the front mounting hardware for the '55, but I'll bet he would have a hard time getting the tranny linkage from the '55 to attach to the '60 transmission if you could get the '60 transmission into the 55 x-frame.

Thanks guys for both of your reply. Both are correct first I was just thinking timing chain cover, and did not realize all would work. I keep forgetting about the transmission.

Yes, Bill, we are both correct, I did not mean to imply that you were not correct. You directly answered his question. I gave another option.
To easily use the 60 engine, he would need to use the 55 Hydramatic transmission. The 55 trans will bolt up to the 60 engine. However, he would need to grind a little off the rear of the crankshaft for clearance, as described by Rich Gabrielson on my web site. |

I used a 60 timing cover on a 66 389 to use the 1st style Hurst mount. It was machined out for the later style seal and requires a tool to center the cover. Paul Spotts sells the tool on ebay now i believe.

Well what's left of it lol. Was just saying its available now. But the only thing is not sure with the changes over the years on the face of the front of the block weather the 60 cover will work. OP is better off using the 2nd style hurst mounts or make his own mounting system.

Just a quick update, I am still in search of a complete engine and transmission assy. from air cleaner to pan and fan to tail shaft here in my local area. I have had a few items I looked at but not what I wanted.

Returning to the original question about exhaust manifolds, 56-58 driver side manifolds dumped to the front thereby avoiding the steering box and master cylinder. An elbow was attached to the front of the manifold. This elbow turned down and the exhaust pipe was attached to it. It was then low enough to pass under the steering box. If you used 57-58 manifolds you would not have to worry about moving the engine to provide clearance for the exhaust. The elbow is available as a repro from Ames. Just a thought. I have located a complete1968 Pontiac 350 carb to pan, and fan to TH350 trans output shaft. I will be picking it up this weekend. All stock 4 barrel.

quick update, I have purchased a 66 complete 326, looking for an automatic transmission next. I think I will go with a TH350, so I don't have to mess with rear gears.

newer update, I scored a 56 running and complete 316 and auto trans for my wagon.
I was missing the drive shaft, but the fellow gave me his old one due to LS swap. a 4 dr wagon and 4 dr car, will the driveshaft be the same length? I need to replace a weeping freeze plug, so I will do all prior to installing into my car. For ref 61 Vent and 55 wagon are the same person. Long story. Thanks |

Both 1955 and 56 Pontiacs came in two wheelbase lengths, 122" and 124". The Chassis Parts Catalog shows different part numbers for 1955 and 1956, so unless you are working with the same wheelbase AND the same year I doubt the driveshafts would interchange.
There is an error in the listing from the Catalog shown below. The line that starts "1955 25 All" should read "1955 27 All". There was no model 25 in 1955. Model 27 was 122" wheelbase in both 1955 and 56. Model 28 was 124" wheelbase in both 1955 and 56.

Thanks Bill, I was just looking at drive shaft posts, and I better ask the guy for the rear end yoke since that is different between 55, and 56.

Yes, they are different between 55 and 56. However, you can get u-joints that have the bearing caps for 55 and 56, so they have one part for those two years. With that, you can use the 56 caps on the drive shaft and the 55 caps for the rear end yoke.
