Battery jump packs
Have any of you real world experience with the new small lithium jumper packs? None of the ones that I've seen tested on line seem to be able to crank an engine for more than a few seconds (2-5). Is there one you have had experience with that works well on our older big displacement engines? If you have a flooded engine and a low battery a few seconds won't cut it. Thanks

Great topic! I’ve been looking into getting one also, but can’t decide between the Nico lithium battery type or one like Dewalt or Jump-N-Carry.

Which NOCO? It seems like the GB70 would be the least you would need. I have never seen one tested on a big V8.

I have the CAT brand one from Costco. I’ve jumped 3 cars/trucks with it without recharging it. I bought it and charged it back in May 2022 iirc. It also has a built in compressor but haven’t tried that feature yet. It’s not small but it definitely works

Upon further review, apparently the sell a smaller version with only the charger. It’s rated at the same 1200 amps as the unit I have. It’s only $69.99

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015TKUPIC...roduct_details
I've used it one time so far. Jumped a Dodge truck for a guy at work. Took it for not clicking the solenoid to spinning like a top. So far so good. |

I have the big NOCO and can’t say enough good things about it. I can get several starts out of a charge- I think I’ve used it 8-10 times on a charge when I am shuffling cars with dead batteries.

Stick to lead acid because lithium dies down (and out) in the winter. Or, what is the lithium cold-cranking Amps?

You're missing the whole point of the jump pack. A lead acid battery won't fit in your glove box.

I have this one for cars and motorcycles: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09F9CR89W/
And we use this guy at work; it'll jump a completely dead 4-battery semi truck on a 40° morning. They make some smaller models that don't cost $1k.

I've had this one for about 8 months and love it.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09HYVM6ZT...0+jump+starter Wanted something a little bigger to handle the diesels truck at work so I bought this one today. Being Cyber Monday I got a great deal. https://www.amazon.com/GOOLOO-GP4000...2-8997e41410bb |

I have this NOCO one and cranks the biggest cube motors with ease (just $164 on Amazon):

The premise of many of these types of jump starter is that the car wants to start, other than the battery being dead. That's not the same as needing to crank a V8 for 20 or 30 seconds when it's flooded and the battery's getting weak from all of the cranking. |

Some AUTOMOTIVE lithium chemistry claim to stay alive to -4F so be sure to get that chemistry. So those are viable, if you feel lucky. Admittedly, I am not chemically-aware of how the Li-ion battery technology solved the "dead-from-cold" trait. Wondering if the "boom or burst-in-flames" factors were also improved. Li-iron-phosphate is out, so Li-carbon might do it, but are there Side-effects? My Lead-Acid resides in the trunk, can take that cold, and NOT go dead. The ones I have tried will not work with a 100% dead battery because the computer chip won't close the circuit unless it sees enough residual voltage. I've also had the new cells time out after a few seconds and shut off before the car battery can support the engine.

I've got a lithium-iron battery in my motorcycle that is rated for snowmobiles, so they will work in the cold. You do sometimes have to key them on for ten seconds or so with the headlight on to let them warm internally.
Guess it all depends on your needs, heck, put the jump starter inside your jacket for a few minutes to warm it up. I keep mine in the house so temps are not a problem. If on the road, keep it behind the seat in the truck so it's not -10. Six of one, half dozen of the other, 50 lb battery is not the most convenient thing either.

I haven't needed to try that, and it comes with the usual caveats and disclaimers about hooking it up incorrectly, etc. that you'd expect, for liability purposes. |
