That’s cool . Personally I owns a RAIV firebird love the car but I enjoy driving the Tesla model X plaid every bit as much and probably more.
It’s every bit as good looking to me. And it serves way more functions. Head to head it’ll blow it away but my turbo 69 firebird 455 will destroy my RAIV also.
It’s the history of the RAIV I have that makes me keep it. Not so much the RAIV history but it’s racing history

These problems though correspond across the board between all vehicles... regardless of being EV. It's the inclusion of wireless technology that we've introduced into vehicles that permits this.

Cars as early as the late 90s were "hackable" with the inclusion of things like OnStar, SOS, and anything that makes a "wireless" connection to the CAN bus... basically the BCM, which is connected to the ECM via a CAN bus network.

Even things like you'd least expect, such as the Tire Pressure Monitoring System, can allow an attacker to hack into your car and affect the systems.

The earliest "hack" was manipulating wireless key fobs. They used to be serialized (like the old garage doors), and then it became a rotating key, etc. But because these fobs are omni-directional, there are capture devices that allow you to capture the rolling key, and since it's a known standard, it can decode the encryption on even the newest models, and replicate the next code in the sequence. You can then in turn (within minutes) program a new FOB that you can use to unlock any car. These are devices you can literally buy online.... for like $40 bucks from AliExpress.

It gets worse... there's a device I have called the UberTooth One. I think I paid $39 for it? It's easily available, and you can use it to hack into the Bluetooth feature of your car's hands-free phone device. Early BlueTooth devices... like BT version 1 and even 2, use default passcodes of 0000 or 1234 (seriously), and these don't get changed. So this is insanely easy. But even BT 3 and now even 4, can be hacked with the Ubertooth One. If I was standing at the street corner, and you were stopped at the light, I could pair with your car if you have Bluetooth enabled, and then begin talking with you through your car's speakers. With things like Kali Linux (using specific modules from Metasploit), you could then exploit certain features of the CAN bus that would allow you access into other areas of the car.

Another concern are the minivans and other devices that have a built in "hot spot" ... basically an access point. In most cases, these cars also use this built in hot spot to perform firmware updates for everything from the radio to the ECM. So it's always on when the car is on. This is why if you've ever had a wireless scanner open as you're driving around, and you'll see Wifi hotspots coming from cars. These are so easy to hack it's not even funny. There are free programs like Kismet from Kali Linux that you could use to hack into a wireless router built into one of these Chrysler vans, and then you can get access to the router which you can then easily exploit and reveal the rest of the network which has the BCM and such.

I'm just speaking specifically about normal cars from the past 10-years. So there's probably more you can do with EVs.

Look... just saying... if the s**t hits the fan one day... I have a 1973 VW Bus with an air-cooled motor, mechanical advance distributor, and a mechanical fuel pump. There's nothing to hack on it... but God forbid I need to run from a group of zombies... I'll probably die trying to outrun them in my bus!!! haha...

EDIT: as far as EV's taking over... I'm not sure they'll take "over..." I think there's still too much reliance on the rare Earth elements that are needed for production, and I think we've gone too far too quickly, to the point that we'll likely see the pendulum swing the other way. I would like to see low-e renewables compliment the energy sector for combustion engines. I think better / more modern engines complimented with offerings of EVs is probably going to be what we end up with in 20 years when the dust settles. But all of that said... it's an eye-opener when a 4-door Tesla sedan with Plaid seats can easily overtake a race-prepped Z06 mid-engine Corvette... which is the pinnacle of Corvette development. I don't really know how I feel about this, because the nostalgia for me is the rumble of a big engine, but at the same time, I recognize how impressive these electric motors are. What I would like to see... are more EV kits being offered that allow us to upgrade a lot of these older cars with EV power. Battery technology will likely be the game-changer on deciding how things go. If we can half the size of the battery while doubling the charge capacity... then EVs will 100% be where everything goes. But as of right now... the infrastructure still doesn't exist to really make an electric vehicle feasible for anything other than city driving and getting back and forth to work every day.
If the **** hits the fan you’d better have a points ignition because magnetic pulse solid state type stuff is gonna be EMP. Dead. I keep a couple points ignitions around just in case because most likely attack on Us is an EMP

Yep.

1956 36hp 1200 & 1966 57hp 1600, both have stock points distributors.

My ‘64 421 HO has the original points distributor as well.

I get it... but I'd have to assume there's more to it than that. I don't know if you still work or are retired (I'm only 45... so still working), but I could never drive a RAM-Air 4 TransAm to work every day. Aside from not wanting to park next to someone who would ding my car... on the days where you just want to get to work, the loud exhaust, etc... it's not something that I'd want to deal with in a morning commute.

Again, I'm from Miami, so half my friends have a Model-X, with Porsche 911s with flat tires (because they stopped driving them). So I totally get it. The Tesla has creature comforts, it's nice inside, and it's cool for the people in the back with the gull-wing doors. I don't know that you feel like "one" with the car though. The only noise you really feel is the groan of the chassis stretching / flexing under the stress of the torque.... haha... but in my opinion... it's an extremely fast, powerful, and well-optioned commuter car. Just my opinion of course... I am generally more jaded by how all cars look today (egg-shaped) than anything else. So... if we were still allowed pre-big-ass mandate, or anything close to pre-1974 bumper mandate... I'd be really interested to see what the Tesla would look like. There really aren't a lot of cars today that I find even remotely exciting.

Yeah, it's a points ignition. There's no ECM or anything remotely close to an ICM. Even the alternator's voltage regulator is external and other than a single resistor on it, it looks to be mechanical... haha.

Hahah... the Bioweapon mode is more a gimmick than anything... but I agree that it is cool. It's like putting your HVAC on MAX (where it shuts off external air). It then takes limited air from the outside, which it first passes through a HEPA filter, and then recirculates the inside air through a HEPA filter as well. I don't know that if there was actually a biological attack, if it would really protect you... since there's more to it than that... e.g., the seals in the doors, etc.

As for it having a Faraday cage, that's simply not true from anything that I can see or find (I hadn't heard this). I'm also not sure you would WANT a Faraday cage on a Tesla, because it produces more EMF than any other car, and to some degree, it's like standing next to a cell tower. If you had a Faraday cage, you'd be trapping yourself in these signals and their only solace would be your body.

Also... a Faraday cage generally means a perfect box of copper. So in order to have an actual Faraday cage, you would use what's called "TEMPEST" guidelines (per DoD) for a SCIF'ed facility. This would require all the glass in your car to have a mesh of copper sandwiched between layers of glass, and this wouldn't be DOT approved because it wouldn't conform to break-away (tempered) glass requirements of passenger doors. The only glass that generally is allowed to have that is the windshield, because it's safer that it stays together, and doesn't shatter in your face. Ballistic glass usually has to get a waiver, and is aftermarket (not DOT approved from the factory). Finally... if your car was a Faraday cage, nothing in your car would work... because the antennas are all part of the chassis. You have WiFi, cellular, and GPS... all of which would be blocked.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trashing Tesla... as I said, I'm a huge Elon Musk fan, and I love Tesla... I'd buy one right now, except that I work from home and I already have too many cars. EV's are popular... literally because of Elon Musk, and the Tesla. Tesla brought the "cool" to electric vehicles, so no shade here from me. I'm just saying, there's two entirely different reasons why you'd own a RA4 TransAm, and a Tesla.

Like... no offense to anyone... the 1970-1974 TransAms are probably my most favorite car on the planet... it has Italian styling, American classic performance, and it's the right amount of gawdy. But I don't really consider those cars to be all that fast by today's standards. The Tesla is sick fast. But like I said before, would you really want to drive an RA4 to work every day? If it was just straight line performance we were interested in. I could drop my Olds 455 Big Block into the back of my 1987 Pontiac Fiero, put a turbo on it, and likely beat everyone on here. It would look ridiculous, and I'd destroy my original high school car (yes! I've owned it since I was in high school, hahah).

On a total side note... that "Win a 1968 Pontiac Firebird" up there in the banner... that side-shot is hot AF... and I don't mean Air Force. I really like those lines. That red racing stripe going down the side really emphasizes the straight lines.

I won't get into the last part (I didn't quote it), but there's something to consider. Tesla is the leader of the pack. It was created entirely independently, is a new company... basically the new kid on the block, and is fundamentally changing the entire landscape of the automotive industry. What's more, they've shown (like with Space-X) that they can do more, with less, and do it better. Everything that America was known for being successful at during the industrial era. It's showing the country that we can do these "hard things" (as JFK would say) simply because it's there. So... yes... Tesla has a lot of enemies... but it has many, many more friends.

Some people couldnt handle a old firebird going to work everyday because people have gotten soft. Yes its easier with the new technology but now we're spoiled. Think of the old lady back in the day with her big car,no power steering and no power brakes. You didnt hear her whining,,she was TCB. Im a victim also....I dont use maps or try to remember how to get home. I whip out the GPS and rely on that now. Youve got cars the parallel park for you so theres go that need to do it yourself. I guess in some ways I prefer the past more than future,,especially these days.

Hahah... I don't know if it's people getting soft. If we used that argument, you could say, why wouldn't people just drive their classic Model-Ts and As to work every day?

I think there's a number of factors... When you're 18-25 (or even 30)... maybe you like the drone of a loud exhaust and things don't bother you as much. But as you get older, the weight of the world ends up on your shoulders, and you have less time for the subtle nuance of a loud exhaust and a Muncie rock crusher when you're navigating in stop and go traffic.

There's also the fact that, the likelihood of getting into an accident (a fender bender), is significantly greater in the daily grind than it is if you're taking your car out on a Sunday or to blow off some steam with a burnout on a back-road.

For me, I really take care of my cars. Even my 2009 Ford Explorer Sport, which to most people is a "nothing" car...

I LOVE this car. My dad gave it to me... before I get a lot of **** for that though, let me explain. Before I deployed to Afghanistan, I bought my wife a new car, and I donated my old Explorer because I didn't want it sitting around for 6-7 months. When I got back I intended to buy a new (used) car, and my dad had this one, and insisted that I take it. He said... either I trade it in and someone else gets it, or you take it and you save some money. So I took it... and it's a gorgeous car. It has no real value worth speaking of... I mean, what is it... maybe a $5,000 car? But it looks fantastic, drives fantastic, and I love it.

But even this car... which has no intrinsic value... I always park way out in a parking lot because I don't want people opening their doors on my car and dinging it. If I owned a 1974 Pontiac TransAm SD-455 RA4, I sure as hell wouldn't be taking it to work except on rare occasions, like a Friday... and I definitely wouldn't be parking it in the mall parking lot because I wanted to go buy something and hang out in the food court...

If I was driving a Honda Civic... and someone hit me... it would suck, but I wouldn't care all that much so long as insurance took care of it. But if I was in a 74 TransAm, and someone hit me... whole other ball game.

That is one minty exploder...I'm guessing it didn't come with the stock firestones lol

I used to take my bird to work every fryday pre-covid when going to an office was a thing.

I would have loved to take it everyday but a one hour commute each way wasn't feasible. I have to laff at just the ridiculousness of driving for an hour to sit in a stupid office FOR NO REASON - covid has been good to me for that reason alone.

Driving the bird in rush hour was still fun - making the commute an interesting visceral experience but she was a 20 footer...lol

People have definitely gotten softer over the years. And Im not saying technology hasnt helped the world,,it definietly has.but its not all for the better. The younger generation doesnt even know whats its like to grow up with no cell phones,no social media,no 150 channels on the TV. Some might argue those are all good things,,,in some ways yes and some ways no.

And you’re sitting back thinking - fools !

Cause these cars (teslas) are game changers. It’s fast like a lambo, has torque that would crush any pontiac torque monster ever built , can drive it comfortably anywhere in comfort (or drive you) yet click of 9s or 10s in the 1/4. While seating 6 , Cooke on , really what’s better than that . Ohh because it doesn’t rumble lmao. I just think this whole dogging hit heels in is so pathetic z. But hey to each his own some people are more open minded I guess .

things change boys.
Interesting Interview with Franz Von Holzhausen (Tesla Chief designer) he did quite a bit of design at GM on what became the Solstace and Sky.

Have to admit I recently bought a Tesla as well, a Model Y Performance.
It is nice on a freezing morning drink coffee in the house hit a couple commands on the phone and have defrosted windows and a nice toasty warm car ready to Go. Liking it so far.

Default First electric vette Fail!

At first glance this may seem
Like a win at 1.15 million
But at the BJ unveilings the car had very little interest or except.
It’s money was given to charity and that had even less excitement
Seems GM Missed its target

The charity was stated as public school teachers (really for classes without supplies) but when announced the room
Was fairly silent.

See if you can find a video of the actual sale on BJ and tell me what you see . But I saw GM owners not interested in either.
