Trouble finding a parking spot??
Cops: 'Extremely Fast' Car Makes Extremely Odd Landing Authorities are trying to figure out how vehicle made its way onto roof of California home A speeding car took flight Sunday and ended up on the second-story roof of a home in Northern California. The story "would seem unbelievable if not for the photo evidence backing it up," per SFGate. Photos shared by authorities show the vehicle resting on the roof of a carport, its front end crushed against the exterior wall of a room featuring a large window, through which first responders were able to access the vehicle. Homeowner Bob Arant, who was away from home with his wife at the time of the crash, believes the SUV flew about 75 feet before landing on his roof. First responders had to stabilize the vehicle using ropes before rescuing the driver and sole occupant, who was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol. The woman was driving "extremely fast" on a road with a posted speed limit of 10mph, the CHP said, per KCRA. The outlet notes "a sign informing drivers of the speed limit was in front of the home" in Cape Horn, about an hour's drive from the Lake Tahoe area. Authorities are still determining how the vehicle made its way onto the roof of the home, "which is on the same level as a hill next to it," per CBS News. The investigation will determine whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. The vehicle has since been removed from the structure, revealing a large hole through which parts of a craft room and stairwell are visible, per KCRA. Arant and his wife are staying in an RV on their property due to the damage. According to a GoFundMe page, the couple's home insurance company informed them "they didn't have coverage for an automobile landing in their home." It adds that "the driver's insurance will be responsible but it is unlikely that their coverage will be enough to cover" the cost of repairs, estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars. In a forest fire zone, any policy you can get may have to do.

Obviously the 'authorities' haven't watched Duke of Hazzard recently.....
It just goes to show you that ANYTHING can fly if it's going FAST enough!
I am quite impressed that the carport itself was structurally strong enough that it didn't collapse. Somebody built THAT right! Good luck to the homeowners. If they had some sort of 'umbrella' liability policy, it might kick in to help them. Glad I live on a cul-de-sac on flat ground......... |

The location is in the Sierra Nevada foothills between Sacramento and Tahoe. Notice the steep pitch roofs. The sloped carport roof would be built for the snow load.

I spent 10 years of my life in the insurance business.
If the homeowners have a traditional HO-3 (or better policy), there is coverage for this. Besides coverage for the damage to the home itself, there is also coverage for the contents and for temporary living expense. An HO-3 gives 'all risk' coverage for the structure. That means that unless specifically excluded in the policy, coverage for a car landing in or on their home is covered. An HO-3 is the most common policy sold to homeowners throughout the United States. This go-fund me crap is just crap. |

Reminds me of the song VanZant wrote about Gary Rossington crashing into an oak tree ....
Whiskey bottle and a brand new car, the roof of your house is in my way . That is an incredible sight that would be mind boggling to have witnessed. Hope the driver recovers easily and stays healthy. Unless the driver was trying Not to live anymore , whatever suits their wishes. |

Maybe the HOA had a limit on how many cars could be parked in the driveway and it was full.
