Shot in the Dark - Searching for a Magazine article
When I was a young and impressionable youth I remember reading a magazine article about taking a '69 Judge street-racing. This may have been tied in to some type of "road-test" of the vehicle, but I don't think it was written back in 68/69?? I seem to recall that the street racing occurred late at night in/around NYC. The author took the car to some shop after receiving it from the press corp and had some tuning magic applied to it before taking it racing.
The car was Carousel Red and it definitely had an auto transmission bc the article talked about how hard the TH400 chirped the tires on the 1-2 shift. I've searched relentlessly for this article. But no luck so far. I thought it would've appeared in a magazine like Super Stock & Drag Illustrated or High Performance Cars, but like I said, I haven't been able to track it down. Does this article ring a bell with any of the older enthusiasts? If so, PLEASE let me know where/when it was published! TIA !! |

That was in I believe Hi Performance Cars and written I believe by Cliff Grover (Gomer or something like that), they eventually morphed into the magazine Hi-Performance Pontiac that was around for decades. They reprinted that article in many later books and also in issues of Hi Performance Pontiac in the 80's or 90's.

That’s the reprint from the 80’s. If you want the original article it must be a December 68 to April 69 issue because it came out just as the Judge was hitting dealers in Jan-feb 69.

Joe oldham wrote an article that was the reason Stephen Pontiac was kicked out of the racing program with Pontiac
Jan 72 article From what I know of the story The dealers son answers questions about things like factory help , and parts that were not supposed to have left Pontiac for racing purposes and also named someone at Pontiac who helped their program. This got back to top brass and the **** hit the fan. The response ( to the article) was their parts being pulled from Butch elkins shop where work was being done on their special parts IE aluminum block . When they went to get the parts they said what parts you don’t have any parts and you’re not in racing anymore. Bill Eckstrom was ripped and quit Stephens and never went back. That was the end of that program. I have their pro stock RAV engine w dual quads in my RAIV firebird that is also one of their race cars .

Cliff Gromer....that's a name i haven't heard (or seen) in a long time. Enjoyed his articles back in the 80s. Wonder what he's up to today?

A quick search shows that Cliff Gromer is senior editor at Mopar Action.

The article appeared in an issue of Musclecars magazine around 1986. I don't know if it was a direct reprint or a reminisce, but if it was the latter it was decently long and not abbreviated.
Just found the issue--it was 1985. First issue I bought when I was a kid. http://99wspeedshop.com.s3-website-u...3n1-spring.jpg Oldham or Gromer wrote it, I believe. |
