I have a 253 Dist from 10/68 that I’m going to convert to breakerless. Putting the ‘65 points dist aside.
Looking for specs on this particular dist so I can determine if it has a proper set of weights and springs for my setup. If not right, is there a good set for what I have listed? 455, 6X-8, Comp cams RAIV cam, ‘68 intake, ‘72 QJet modified, 2.5” long branch, 3.42 Saf t track, M-20 2.56 1st 400 hp, 500 ft-lbs 65 Catalina 2 dr sedan. #rockyrotella |

You need to put it on a distributor machine and check the curve.
And, better off with points. At least they will not leave you beside the road and make the same power as electronic. |

The HEI ignition system was necessary to burn EGR-filled lean fuel-air mixtures so that the catalytic converters would not be destroyed. The other breakerless aftermarket ignition systems are toys. Use the ignition system that came with the car when it was new and you will avoid problems.
#1111253 is a nice unit used on 2-bbl engines 1967-69. Centrifugal advance starts @ 1000 rpm / 0-4°, intermed. 2000 rpm / 10-14° and max 18-22° @ 4600 rpm. Vacuum advance 1115374 starts @ 10-12 in/hg and adds 20° @ 17-19 in/hg. For a RAIV cam i would not use the bushing on the centrifugal advance stop pin and set initial to 12-15°. I would also use a ported source for the vacuum advance. Your 72 Q-jet low speed cicuit WILL have to be modified, otherwise you´ll be chasing your tail with "ignition issues". JMHO |

Here's how Jim Hands set up his timing for his 455 with a RA4 Cam.
Now he was running Rhoads lifters so you might want to try and bring in your advance a little sooner until 3000 rpm is reached. This what he worked out by modifying his HEI. Assuming your mark on your balancer is correct for TDC ( easy to check) if you make a mark 2 1/8" further around that is 36 degrees and 1 1/16" back the other way is 18 degrees. Even without a dial back timing light this should allow you to play around a good amount and at least get a feel for what the motor might like.

From that article, he is describing the actual mechanical advance the distributor is providing at those rpm points, with a total of 29 degrees advance at peak. No where in the article can I find that he mentions what his initial setting is so the "total" timing all in is a mystery.
