well i think the idea that a "step up" probably involves a cam change is good to know. guess i will see what i feel like messing around with this winter. car is plenty fun but i guess with some porting and a road paver she might be even more fun!!!

Go to a Ported Torker I, or better yet a Spreadbore P4B port-matched, and you could leave the heads box-stock.

I’ve got the box at 6500. 5800 to 6000 seems to be it’s “happy place”.

i thought pontiacs needed beehives and titanium retainers to pull 6500.

Those heads were converted to a 2.19 intake valve which is a bit heavier, then had Paul spec the dual springs for the Hydraulic roller, I set them up at the install height he recommended. 160 lbs. seat pressure and 420 open. I think the retainers are titanium though. Dad repeatedly puts that thing on the chip, the engine revs up quicker than he can shift the darn thing. Has a 6300 chip in it and he's all over it all the time. It runs right up there no problem. On the dyno it was done making power however at 5800 rpm but still carried nicely just past that. My chevelle has slightly heavier valve train (BBC) with a similar dual spring setup. 2.25 1.88 valves that aren't fancy lightweight stuff. Again it does have titanium retainers. BBC's are horrible about valvetrain weight and can sometimes have valvetrain issues as well. Hydraulic roller and it zings right up to 6500. Made peak power at 6300 but runs best times when I shift at 6500. Rev limiter at 6800. That engine has been together 25 years doing that LOL Last edited by Formulajones; 06-22-2023 at 11:16 PM. |

really 100 hp from a cam swap and some porting?? that seems worth the cost and effort.

Really when you think about it, 462 with un-ported E-heads, Performer rpm intake and a Q’jet. Basically Ram Air IV hyd cam with 520 lift made 500 hp. So yeah a 505 which is 43 more ci, 330 cfm head vs 270-280 head. And that Road Paver hyd roller cam, better intake, yes 100 hp easily. Place your order. You want fries with that…LOL

Lets say your heads flow 270-280 and you port them out to 330 cfm. A 30 cfm increase in head flow will make a 10% increase in horsepower, you’ll see 50 cfm increase. I think from what I’ve read your at 500 hp. The Road Paver cam definitely has more duration and lift that will take advantage of the increase in cfm. Going to a better ported intake means you won’t see as much of a drop in cfm. I’ll have to go back and read the whole thing again to give you a definitive answer on weather it’ll actually be a 100 hp increase. But just figuring using 10% factor, you’ll definitely be at minimum of 60-70 hp increase.

Ok I see said 10.1 compression thats good. Also see it falls off at 5500. The Road Paver going to move you up in 6000 rpm range, thats real good its going to take advantage of that almost 50 cfm pick up. Being its a 505. To a 70-80 hp gain, and if you go with North Wind intake your going to come damn close to 600 hp.
