Mechanical fuel pump oil leak ?
What would cause motor oil to leak out of the bottom of a mechanical fuel pump ?
Thank you. |

A bad diaphragm in the fuel pump. You've probably got gasoline in the crankcase also. Check the oil level and smell it.

X2 with Greg unless it's leaking where it joins the timing cover

I don’t believe there’s anyway for a mechanical pump to leak oil externally without leaking fuel externally also.
Must be from the pump to timing cover gasket,

You are right. I can tell you from personal experience that I had oil coming from the weep hole on my fuel pump. Didn't make sense to me until I put some on my finger. It was very thin and smelled like gasoline and the dipstick smelled gassy as well. So yes, it was a mixture of oil and gas and that looks like oil at first glance.
Now if the leak is isolated to the gasket between the fuel pump and the timing cover, maybe a different story.

The OP should not run the motor until he at least drops the filter off and smells it for traces of gas.

A friend of mine personally witnessed a guy start his engine when gas had leaked into the oil... Boom!... He said that it blew the seals and gaskets out!

I have never seen that in person, but when I worked part time at a repair shop in the late 70s we had a Caddy towed in from a women’s house that such a thing took place in.
