Thanks Jeff! Am betting the buckets in your Tacoma are the same as in our 4Runner.
Is your bed over 6' in length, I'm not up on the earlier double cab Tacomas.

Formula Jones, you must be reading my mind. I almost posted that same comment yesterday. I know some people love their foreign trucks but around the metro Detroit area, they were never very popular. Toyota had lots and lots of trucks bought back and carried away. My buddy worked at a local Pontiac dealer and there was a Toyota dealer across the street and every night, when it got dark a car carrier or 2 would leave with many trucks loaded on them. I don't know what model truck, but they were Toyotas, something about frame breakage. Every manufacturer has problems. Everyone likes to complain that their American car is terrible, but their foreign car is perfect. My dad worked for gm for 49 years and I have been there for38 years. I grew up working on cars, mostly GM, because of the GM training classes and access to special tools. My grandfather taught auto mechanics for 40 years, so I have worked on many cars.

Probably Tacoma's with frames from Dana corp. Made in America for what it's worth.

The standard bed on the double cab is 5’. This is what I have. In this configuration the truck is the same length as the extended cab with the 6’ bed. They did make an extended wheelbase version of the double cab with a 6’ bed.

It does everything I need it to do and if I need to haul something bigger I just grab my 4x8 trailer.

I currently have a 2wd 2016 F150 Lariat crew cab with the 2.7 Ecoboost. 157" wb (6.5 foot bed). Currently at 108,000 miles. COMPLETELY trouble free miles. Lifetime fuel mileage of 21.1. (one of the savants on here suggested it would be nothing but trouble.....) After 6 shoulder surgeries that have left me with a metal and plastic shoulder joint, I'm considering something smaller. I also get complaints from regular passengers (one being my wife) that it's hard to get in. I have a friend with a 2020 Honda Ridgeline that he loves. I've spent a little time in it and it's waaaay more comfortable than the other small trucks I've been around. Looks? Kinda ugly. Function? Pretty good and probably about right for my needs and it's a Honda, so reliability should be strong . I retire at the end of this year, we'll see.

Starting at an early age Ive had a pickup.
First a 68 C10 long bed, which got totaled when a rock truck rear ended me. I bought a 72 C20 body shell for $75 and took everything off the old truck. This truck was moved to farm duty only, having purchased an extended cab S10 that kids each had a seat in. Many years it was the daily driver until it got T boned by someone running a stop sign.I went looking for used S10s and found that I could buy a leftover cheaper than a used one. X cab with about every option but was 1.5 yrs old. Apparently this dealer had rounded up all the leftovers and was clearing them out. I still have this truck and am currently doing upgrades to it. phase II was others in family. A family friend gave son a Ranger that was their deceased sons. it seemed like there was always something to work on with this, the warning label is on the front Fix Or Repair Daily. looking for a replacement the 2nd gen Colorado seemed to fit. I found a 2016 that was 8 months old, about 10K on clock but had been in an accident. I test drove the truck around the auction lot, perfect candidate for a cheap new truck 4dr cab Z71 2WD with about every option, leather,Bose etc. no air bag deployment,no fluids leaked. Fender, rear door, bedside and headlights grille and bumper skin. replaced. All parts were new GM,as there wasnt any used parts out there yet. Truck now has about 160k on it and has been very reliable

Working the ‘66 single cab this morning, a friend turned me on to a bunch of clean 8’ 2x4s and a few sheets of plywood from a demo job on the shop next door to his.
Swallowed up those boards like nothing, it’s a hard working 1600cc truck. My 1200cc 1956 panel bus got the day off, relaxing next to my 1957 bug that’s heading to the body shop soon.

Did that VW come like this or did you make it out of a bus. I've never seen one like it, really neat.

This single cab pickup is just one of the many different body variations offered by VW on the Type 2 Micro Bus. Pictured below is a crew cab or double cab version in the same factory Velvet Green as my single cab. The double cabs are the one of the most sought after and valuable Type 2 commercial vehicles, the one pictured below was sold on BAT and brought 85k, anything in decent shape even as a non-running project can sell for 40k easily. It’s interesting to note that all of the air-cooled VWs from the Type 1 beetle, Karmann Ghia, Thing, Type 2 bus and Type 3 Squareback/Fastback/Notchback are all built on the same 94.5” (2400mm) wheelbase. A minor exception would be the the ‘71 and later Super Beetle which had a slightly longer 95.3” wheelbase due to the Macpherson strut front suspension design.

Another single cab with a wide bed option (rare factory option) getting worked hard. This particular wide bed doesn’t look factory but again they were an option.

First showing the single cab with some interesting factory options and next the double cab pickup.

More of the double cab and then onto the panel delivery.
Next comes the Kombi which is basically a panel delivery with side windows and removable passenger seating. The inside of the Kombi is finished the same as a panel delivery in factory gray primer. A business owner using the Kombi to run his business during the week could also use it to take his family around on evenings or weekends.

More Kombi (Combination) and onto the cutaway showing the huge amount of cargo space inside these Micro Buses. The power plant in 1961 was the 40hp 1200, it wasn’t until 1963 that a 51hp 1500 became available as an option and by 1964 the 1500 became standard.
The split windshield buses had their last run for the German and US markets in 1967. The tooling ended up in Brazil and production continued there for quite some years after that. The Brazilian buses don’t command prices anywhere near what German ones bring. These vehicles have very different mechanical features and required some knowledge of their workings but they were actually very easy to work on and maintain. They have their pluses and minuses just like any other. I learned to turn a wrench on them in my driveway as a teenager, and used them exclusively as my transportation until I was 30 years old. Then I discovered the Pontiac V8 and well……now I know Pontiacs too.

Am looking forward to test driving the 2012 Prerunner my first cousin owns. Just pouring over old specs, all I can figure is there is slightly less driver's hip room with the 06-15 Tacoma than in our 06 4Runner. That noted, have found it best, to really pay attention to my right foot positioning/ foot angle to the gas pedal.

I was lucky to once visit the German Museum of Science and Technology (Deutsches Museum) and was blown away by the materials, mechanisms, machines, and precision machining they had hundreds of years ago. I have a lot of respect for German engineering. |

Just watched a "driving with coffee" or whatever with Jerry Seinfeld and Michael Richards ... they were in an old Kombi double cab with lots of patina.

Had a small Dakota for years did everything my bigger trucks did as far as hauling scrap lumber etc. It had the larger bed and factory HD springs. Currently have a '06 Tundra w/15K, only because it was given to me by my late BIL. Do have at work my '88 Mini Ram 50(mitsubishi mighty max) 4WD auto and a/c 100K on the clock. Going to have it painted(0 rust) not going to say how much I paid for it but it was super cheap!

My neighbor has a Tacoma and I was looking for one 2 weeks ago, the nearest access cab 4X4 was 275 miles away. I inquired and they wouldn't sell to an out of state customer. A 6' bed was a must for me. There were three 2023 Ranger XLT extended cab 4x4s in Michigan and I ended up buying one of them. Based on comfort and driveability, I now like the Ford better.
