Went to the NH Muscle car club season opener, great show to start the season

The auto shop at my son's school had their annual car show/fundraiser tonight. This year we were able to take both cars since my son has his license, but he still hasn't mastered the clutch yet so he got the keys to the GTO. It's always a pretty neat show because of the variety of stuff that shows up. Everything from muscle cars, old trucks, VWs, rock crawlers, to fire trucks this time. Really nice '69 FB 400 convert showed up as well.

He wanted to hang out with his friends while the show was wrapping up so I left him with the GTO. When he got home he told on himself...

"I did a burnout on the way home. My brain was telling me no, but my heart was telling me yes."

I had a good laugh, but it's probably going to be a little while before he gets the keys alone again. I did a lot of burnouts in that car when I was his age, but it had half the power and a peg leg 2.73!

Well I certainly hope you presented him with his Man Card upon his return.

I definitely had an “‘atta boy” moment. He’s a pretty careful and conscientious kid, so I was kind of surprised, but he is 16.

To earn the man card he has to learn to drive the T/A.

Almost done stripping the black paint off these grills. I don’t know what I put on there 30 years ago, but it’s some good stuff. Used a whole quart of stripper. And I thought it was gonna be a 20 little minute scuff job!

Installed a new dome light cover in the '72 T/A.

Had a buddy buff the paint on the '74 Formula.

Drove the 140 miles or so to our hotel. Our 100+ mile cruise is in the morning, then back home.
We filled up about the 100 mile mark because I found a gas station with non ethanol gas, just like I run back at home. Mileage on GTO was 18mpg. Lemans, with its 2.69 gears, got 25! I’m VERY skeptical about this, as I think my son’s pump may have shut off too soon. I’ll average it out over the whole run, and report back.

Got home from my rod run. 420 miles total.
I thought something was fishy with that LeMans mileage I posted yesterday,so I took the total for each car for the entire run. GTO 15.7mpg Lemans 17.9mpg
Not nearly as good on the way out there, but it was held northwest of Milwaukee, and today’s mileage included a lot of suburban type driving.
Both cars ran flawless, and my 16 year old got some great seat time diving the LeMans, as wife and I drove my ‘71.
The run starting and ending points were at some really nice shops.

Sanded the top of the grills to get the clear anodizing off, looked like crap, gave it a light polish. Got some SS fender washers, to cover those unsightly oversized holes, and gave them a polish.

Bumper filler piece installed. Just need to get 2 trustworthy friend together to install new bumpers.

Ordered a cam and lifters from Summit and Butler, respectively. Boy, I remember when you could buy a cam with lifters for $100 from Summit, and it wasn’t a big to do to break it in. Showing my age I guess.
Shout out to Jim Hand and his son for a cam recommendation too.
Looks like it’s rain tomorrow, so if I can get some things done around here, I may take one of the Pontiacs out for a spin. Beautiful 70 degree day right now.
