I have a 1971 GTO. One of the things I was always disappointed with was the grilles. They look flat and plain compared to all the other years designs.
So I decided to do something about it. I took a pair of 1972 GTO grille bezels and painted the inside semi-gloss black. Then I cut and fit a pair of 71 GTO grille mesh. As you can see from the pictures below, I believe it gives the front view some depth, more in line with most Pontiac designs.
What do you all think?

I definitely agree. I too, also wondered what happened when Pontiac designed the 71 GTO grilles. They are in no way in line with other Pontiac grille designs.

A good look for a lightly modified car, esp with the black painted grille bezels & the '72 parking lamp ornaments. The flush mount dull silver mesh inserts in the '71 GTO grilles always bothered me as well. The black mesh inserts in the '71 Judge grilles are at least palatable. Am glad the styling dept had a chance to clean things up some with the '72's. Esp for a model that wasn't supposed to be!

As OPH said, the blacked out Judge grills are the better choice look for 71 (I did mine that way), but I like your take too. Go with what you like!

I put 74 Catalina grill inserts in my 74 Bonneville because I preferred the look too, so I totally understand going with what you like

Indeed, Pontiac dropped the styling ball on the standard 71 grills.
