Default Butler TKX Kits and Others

I've been looking to put a TKX into my 76 Trans Am. The kits are now sold without driveshafts.

The Butler kit goes for $3925. But, they also sell the bare transmission for $2895.

The kit includes the cross-member, isolator and a few other parts.

Am I missing something, or is over $1,000 a little high for these additional parts? Then you still have to buy a driveshaft. The same goes for Summit and Classic Industries. The pile of parts they give you with the kits look like they can be bought for under $500 if you look around.

Is there a real value in buying this as a kit, now that they removed the driveshaft?

Do you already have a manual car? If so you probably don't need the extra parts at that price. I switched to a 5 speed and didn't buy a kit(already a stick car). I had to buy a different clutch disc, shifter handle, and cut the drive shaft. I used my existing crossmember, just had to move it and drill a couple of holes. (67 GTO)
It's also mandatory to check your bellhousing for parallel and concentricity.

I would buy the trans and the remaining items you need individually. You will need to measure for the driveshaft and order it from your favorite place.

Call Jody Haag a Jody's Transmissions. He can make recommendations for you and sell you a transmission with whatever other parts you decide you want. Not really a kit but you buy things "a la carte". You can reuse whatever existing parts you have and change/upgrade as you wish. I found his prices for things like clutches, etc to be very competitive.

I've never used the driveshafts even when they were offered in kits, I'd just delete them from the order. I've always used a local driveline shop to build my custom driveshafts to the HP level I need.

As years went on these suppliers found it was better to not offer driveshafts because these cars have been messed with so much the standard lengths were a crap shoot anymore so they have slowly stopped supplying them.

I'd call around and price shop. American power train, hurst, modern driveline, silver sport formerly known as keisler, and others all offer kits in various forms and they've been doing it for decades. You can order as much or as little as you want/need. There are even a couple places local to me that are dealers.

Are you buying a TKX that is modified to fit your 76 Trans am?

Have you checked directly with Silver Sport? https://www.shiftsst.com/tremec-tkx-...gm-f-body/p252

@formulajones: I was going to shop locally for a driveshaft, so it's no problem that it's not included. As to the other vendors I really didn't want to start blasting out emails until I had a little more basic info.

@chuckies76ta: base TKX location would be fine. A little cutting is a non-issue.

@jwcfbd: not directly, though, I've seen their site. There are a few vendors who don't put a ballpark price on their website. For now, I'm just looking at the companies that aren't afraid to post pricing.

All those places I listed will give ya a quote with a simple form to fill out. I don't know of any that can give a blanket price up front for a kit and stick to it unless you just want a single part.
That said, if you search the sites I listed there are prices for single parts on the sites if you can navigate through them. Some aren't so easy to navigate though.
Best way to price shop though is filling out a form and get a full quote, then you can weed out what you don't need and compare.

Ive always found they are all within a couple hundred dollars when it's all said and done unless you find the occasional sale over the holidays, but that's come and gone for the most part.
Hit a big show like good guys or BJ and the major players are usually there selling and offering show specials with 10 percent discounts. That's how Ive bought some of mine.
Just tossing out some options and ideas
