Hood scoop insert paint question
My 66 GTO has been repainted a couple of times over the years (first time in 1988 when I was in high school), and I didn't realize that part of the hood scoop insert is supposed to be black. Can someone tell me if it's flat black, gloss or semi gloss?
Thanks, Importsmasher

Not gloss.
I can't decide between semi, flat or matte. I never can tell. Edit: I just walked out and looked; would say not flat, either. K

Agree this black is NOT gloss or flat.
I say it’s the term seen often on these cars ….. 60 degree black or semi black. The most important thing on the 65,66,67 hood scoop is the black in the inner ribs. Drives me nuts that so many of these repainted cars people do not go back and paint the black.

How?
Any info on how the factory painted the insert? Was it done after body color or prior? Try to wrap my mind around mass production and details like this one.

Good question. I painted the black on a few back in the 80’s and it was a little time consuming.

Hood Scoop
I have a NOS scoop and can add some pics when I next get a chance for that. It is red oxide primer with the scoop "Air Inlet" section already blacked out. Paul

I would suggest they painted the black first, then masked the black (using a reusable mylar or aluminum shield) to paint body color over the top. We did some vehicle two tones that way, where the center (inset) secondary color was painted first, taped over, and then the primary body color painted. K

Found it.
I knew I had one showing the paint process.
Factory red oxide primer that someone was prepping for a color. Obviously the semi gloss Black was applied first. I would assume some type of a firm mask was temporarily pushed into the inner ribbed portion and then body color was applied.

For mass production it would be faster/cheaper to paint black and then block off the openings for body color application, than to apply body color and later mask the openings for black out.

Hood Scoop
Here are the pics from the NOS '65-'67 GTO hood scoop I have. Was it all in primer and then the black was sprayed in the scoop area with some kind of mask on the outside or was the black sprayed into the scoop (no primer under the black) and then a mask was placed into the scoop and the primer applied to the outside? From here I can believe that a mask was placed into the scoop area and the body color was applied over the primer. Just had to make sure the mask in the scoop was not covering any primer on the edges of the scoop opening or one would end up with body color, then a primer line and finally the black scoop. Who was there to know for sure? Paul

Just like covering the chrome valve covers and painting the engine. Every now and then, a little overspray on the chrome. Definitely a line on the dip stick bracket between the bolt and the dip stick. Who was there to know for sure?
