I need to paint my cast iron exhaust manifolds. I want to use something that will last. I've heard of using brush on stuff years ago but no idea what it was. Want color to be a light gray possibly.

Anyone have a recommendation?

I painted my RARE HO manifolds 5ish years ago with POR15 Hi temp aerosol, is holding up great so far. It is a two part mix, so once you pop the activator, you only have a day or so to spray. You gotta bake it for a bit to cure. I used an old BBQ.

Do a search, this has been discussed recently. I also used POR15 on cast iron exhaust manifolds as well as a turbo wastegate, looks great and lasts as long as any paint can. Ceramic coat in a cast iron color will last much lonbger & has insulating properties that paint doesnt have.

POR-15 manifold paint is the least expensive and I’ve used it with success.

I used the brush on version several times and it came out looking very nice.

I believe there was a thread about using spray graphite dry lubricant. IIRC the PROS were cheap, long lasting and easy touch-up. Don't remember the CONS. Anyone using it?

I tried a bunch of differing tings since the 80's. (Nearly) All good until the cars sits in a humid garage over Winter. Then every cast metal and bare metal gets corrsion, even the dash knobs.

Prepare the ground for Water-shed outside, and De-humidify so the the garage floor is not moist.

a buddy was restoring a Tbird and blasted the manifolds and coated with fresh motor oil.
He then "seasoned" them. Start car up and first whisp of smoke shut it off and let cool.
The time running until whisps will get longer until its seasoned

Have them jet hot coated I got my manifolds used in 2012 been on the car since still look great. It’s not cheap but it will last

Years ago I used Calyx exhaust paint on a set of manifolds. Held up pretty well. Eastwood sells it.

The one and only time i sweated the look of cast iron manifolds i simply sand blasted, sprayed them off with brake clean then sprayed them with silver spray paint marketed for BBQ's .... if i remember right i did run them shortly to give tem some real heat then let them cool before regular use..... over 20 years ago they dont look fresh but they are not rusted hulks either

Basically the same procedure chefs use for cast iron pots and pans. It’s brilliant to use the same process on exhaust manifolds. Instead of motor oil, I’ll bet you could use Avocado oil as it has a very high heat tolerance. However you might find yourself craving a salad when you take the car for a spin

I've used stove paint with great results. On my Model T it still looked good after 13 years, and on my '67 GTO I'm just starting to get a little rust after 13 years.

So, for curing these paints, what are you guys using to "bake" them (other than running them on the engine)? Old BBQ grills, your home oven, other? I bought a spray can of the POR-15 silver to paint my manifolds for a fresh engine build, but now I don't know what to use to bake. Will they leave my oven or BBQ permanently toxic?
