Default Dome light door jam switch - how dumb am I?

Hi all,

What I thought would be a two minute job has turned into something ridiculous and I must be doing something wrong.

OK, so I thought perhaps I could remove old dome light switch, plug in the wire to the new switch, and bolt in the new switch. The connectors seem to turn independent of the nut that bolts into the body.

However, there seems to be another mechanical screw connection between the "intermediate tube" (between the plunger and bolt portion) that also can "unscrew" from the bolt portion. Tension from the wire as I'm securing the bolt to the body causes the "intermediate tube" to losen up from the bolt and move in and out. Which is bad.

Tried instead to first bolt switch to body, then attach wire lead (lying on my back with seat giving me a compressed disk). Still, the intermediate tube" seems barely threaded? to the bolt, and easily released.

Anyone dealt with this and know the easiest way to assemble?

Thanks!

p.s. Arrow in pic points to "intermediate tube"

I can't speak for repop but original switches have a feature that you could call sell-adjusting. The tube part that protrudes out past the nut is press fit, it can move up or down to adjust the length of the switch to factor for assembly variations between the door and the jam. This way at the factory the first door slap would push in that tube so that the switch would be nicely adjusted.

x2 to noth's description. I didn't trust the reproduction so I "reset" the originals to the initial extension. The door then pushes the intermediate tube to the new position. in the photo, you can see the witness mark where the switch was before I reset it.

Thanks for that expertise Ben & Noth! I'll give it another go with the original maybe. I was driving w/ my kids and my 10 year old mentioned the curtesy light under the dash was flashing while we drove - tracked it down to the dome light switch. The "intermediate tube" was loose, but maybe it just came undone and I can reset it.

Still have the problem of how to install these buggers. Seems like install first then hook up the wire.. but what a PITA.

Thanks again!
