Converting a 66 GTO auto to a 4 speed. Have an original 67 Z bar, Just purchased a repo 66 Z bar. My question is .... Are the spring holes in the same location for both the 66 & 67 Z bars?

The hole/spring orientation is the same. IIRC the '66 Repro bar needs to be drilled.

Don’t quote me on this as it’s been decades since I dealt with the 64-67 Clutch Z Bars.
The 64-66 Z bar has a small hole at the top for a smaller clutch rod. I recall the 1967 Z bar is a one year design. The top hole is larger to accommodate the larger clutch rod. Careful not to mix the two. |

Thanks for the information. I did notice on the repo coming my way that both rod holes do not appear to have the shoulder that was extruded like an original. Will know when it arrives.
If it does not, I'll have a machinist friend of mine make up some small bushings and tig weld them on. I would think they were in the originals for greater surface area for the rods to rotate on. I do know that the 67-bar hole as you indicated is larger to accept a nylon bushing for the rod. Any event I appreciated all the feedback. Regards, Joe |

Hello, received the repo 66 z bar. If anyone has a few pics of an original they could share it would be appreciated. I have a couple of concerns with the repos. One would be the frame
side tube. I install the ball bushings and the inner most one slides easily thru the tube. As with the 67 tube it has 3 indents around the tube to stop/place the bushing in the proper location. Thanks in advance, Joe |

Dropped off the repo z bar yesterday for some machine work. We are adding "shoulder" bushings to both arms to get greater surface area contact with the repo pedal rod and clutch push rod. Also have a bushing added to the inside of the tube to create a positive stop for the inner ball bushing on the frame side. Question... Was thinking of machining up some oilite bushings to place in the arm holes to take up the loose fit of both rods. Any cons to this idea?

My thinking is oilite bushings may be a bit soft to withstand the force in the clutch linkage system. A steel bushing would be better to reduce wear in the Z-bar and rod.
In my case, I got tired of the OEM design and added spherical rod ends to the clutch rods. Works more smoothly and won't wear. George
