Hello I have a 1969 GTO judge. I was thinking about adding a hood tach. The car was not originally optioned. With one but was thinking of adding one. What is everyone’s opinion on a hood tach?

I installed one on a 69 Grand Prix and a 68 Firebird. I think they are great and unique to Pontiac, ( almost). My only advice would be: 1. Make sure you have the correct template with the exact location for the Tach. 2. Tape the hood carefully where your carving the big hole. 3. Use a high quality hole saw. I used a Starrett brand They are very smooth and accurate.

I went back and forth for my 67 and finally did it. It looks good and I like it. One thing I wondered about was it's accuracy so i installed an Autometer on the column and they stay within a 100 rpms of each other.

Use the template!

I read somewhere that since it was not a factory install and was done at the dealer they made the hole how they could and it was not unusual to use tin snips, so, to be correct you need a jagged edge ha ha. I had mine done with a plasma at the shop and I wasn't around to watch.

I added one to my 71 GTO. One thing I did that really helped is making a template out of card board , like the solid flat card board found on the back of a pad of paper. I cut it out the exact size of the hood tach along with the holes for the studs and center hole. This allows you to move it around on the hood and get a visual of where it will be. I also used it to transfer the hole locations onto the hood. HTH

Add one if you want. I think it's a pretty cool little novelty item. Even though it's in your line of sight, it's still a bit hard to read and watch while making dragstrip passes. Put one on dad's GTO years back. Restored a Vega Yenko Stinger that also has a hood tach made by Dixco. Pretty cool stuff.

One of my favorite additions to my ‘68. No regrets drilling that big hole in the hood. There was a guy on here selling adhesive templates to place to hole. Can’t remember who I got it from.

I put one on mine. What's a judge without a hood tach. The only thing about them is with the original lighting in them they are hard to see at night. Or else iam getting too old! So I ended up putting a couple 12 v miniature led grain bulbs in it to see it at night. You can get them at hobby shops used for model train layouts.
There are old posts on here about how to do it. Lights it up now and can see it at night. Now what to do about not seeing it when it rains hard! Maybe miniature windshield wiper off a Mercedes head light! (LOL)
