Boy at this point I would add a can of Restore to the motor .
A improvement showing in the reduction of smoke would point to problems with ring seal.

I am not running any PVC. I just have two open breathers. I was getting some oil on my valve covers after hard pulls with cheap allstar performance breathers. I replaced those with K an N ones and no more oil on the covers. I do have some smoke that looks almost like steam coming out of them at idle still. Im sure I have some crankcase pressure but can that really cause the issues im having? Im not sure with my cam I have much vacuum at idle for a pcv valve.

I made a plate to mount on the carb pad to be able to pressurize the intake with all intake rockers off, and see what is leaking. I sealed the studs a while ago and I do believe it made it better. I still smoke only at idle. Ill test later today.
There's a thread in the street section that I believe is what I might have. Home Porting Unexpected Feature https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=866228 The head bolt holes all break through in mine and are sleeved. Its been like this since I've bought the car. I really cannot remember if it smoked at idle before, but in my rebuild I did have the heads cleaned and checked out at a cylinder head shop so maybe the sealing is compromised from the cleaning? I did not put any sealer on the top or bottom of studs. Just like his findings I use the fel pro 1016 gaskets with the slotted opening for those studs. Exposing the crankcase. I have a evap smoke tester that pushed 1 psi but I do have other fittings I can bump up the psi higher. Last edited by spectramitch; 08-28-2024 at 06:23 AM. |

Things are taking a turn for the worse again. I pressure tested the intake and it was all okay with the crankcase. No leakage from rocker studs or head bolts. I did decide to do another leak down test with my garbage Harbor Freight tester. My results are all a lot worse than they were in April of 2024. I dont trust the testers accuracy but recorded readings of 20-40% and hearing the escaping pressure through the rings is bad. To make my night even worse I sent my borescope in the holes to look at the pistons and bores. The first 2 are of cylinder 1 the last 2 are 6. Does it look like pre-detonation in cyl 6?
Im so upset but I think I might have my 3rd rebuild in 2 years. |

Pitting seen like that are certain signs of damaging detonation taking place.
That pitting is where the mixture is very lean and lights off by just the cylinder pressure the motor has even before the spark comes a long. Detonation will rattle the Pistons around and unseat if not also crack the rings. You have a mess on your hands I am so sorry to say! :-(

Okay so my leak down results were not as bad as I described. When I was doing my intake pressure test I removed the head studs to see if the sleeves were leaking. So when I did the leak down without those studs of course it was as bad as what it was! I used a new tester and have the same if not a little better test results than in May when I got it together. I also dont think it was pre detonating must have been carbon. Im really stumped here.
I burned a quart of oil in about 100 miles too. Would a vacuum pump be a good thing to try? Like I said I just have two breathers no pcv. Video of blow by at idle: https://youtube.com/shorts/Ol0FEbKIN...dzEDarWlKdKbmC ![]()
