Default 1950 Pontiac Rear Axle

Rear axle seal is leaking by the looks of things the axle needs to be repaired. Does anyone make a repair kit for this?

Thanks for any info

CPR (pontiacparts.net) claims to have the bearings, although they say they fit 37-64 but they do not have the outer o-ring that I know later (56-58) ones needed.
CPR also has a replaceable seal C412111R that might have been separate from the bearing for 39-54 that might work for you if the bearings are still good and original.
I think CPR also has the other gaskets needed.

The MPC (master parts catalog, https://www.pontiacsafari.com) shows different bearing numbers for 37-55, 56-58, 59-60 (64). I don't know what the exact differences are.

Fabcraft (https://fabcraftmetalworks.com/) has bearing kit RA6-0400-A which has the outer o-rings but they claim fits 56-64. The included seals only work with later (58-64) axles.

I am using the Fabcraft bearings on my 57, and they seem to have slightly wider inner race than original (1.047" vs 0.987"), and have integral rubber seals on 2 sides of the bearing instead of 1 side (as original). Some of that extra width will just move the pressed on lock rings further inward on the axle.

From your pic I am not seeing an outer o-ring and do not know if that would have been originally used in 1950. I am also not seeing the separate seal that CPR sells, so maybe your bearings have been replaced once and are using integral seals. I would think that the outer o-ring would be important to contain oil to have unless a lot of sealant is put in there.

Here are the dimensions that I measured from the Fabcraft bearings in their RA6-0400-A kit, in case you want to compare with yours:

ID: 1.533" (39mm), OD: 3.150" (80mm)
Width:
0.824" (21mm), at outer race
1.047" (26.6mm), across inner race, which bulges out on each side
Outer bulge (larger radius, o-ring closer): 0.125"
Inner bulge: 0.093"

I have not installed mine yet, but will be soon. The difference in outer bulges of the inner race for me will move the axle flanges inward by .033" each side, unless I add some shimming.

For completeness, the referenced Fabcraft bearing looks like this one, intended for Ford 9" and Olds/Pontiac (9.3), dimensions seem to line up almost exactly:
Moser Engineering Axle Bearings 9508B (RW508ER-1531)
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msr-9508b
ID=1.531", OD=3.150"
Inner race thickness is 1.045" and outer race is 0.825". (per comment)
