I'm trying to install the alternator bracket on my 70 ram air III without power steering. According to the assembly manual the bolt goes into the hole in the head as shown in the AIM and my photos. The problem is that hole on my head has no threads and isn't very deep. Any thoughts?

I think it goes to the hole below that one?
It is against the head bolt basically. (have to make sure it's not too long?)

You are right. I identified the wrong hole in my picture, The hole I identified is threaded and would work but it is not the correct hole. The hole toward the bottom as shown in the AIM is a blind hole with no threads.

I'm thinking I will have to tap it but it is the original #12 head that the motor came with and somebody had to have an alternator on it. No telling what may have happened in the 52 years before i got it.

Is the passenger head hole tapped?

The passenger head hole has beautiful threads. Looks like I'm tapping.

1970 alternator brackets are the one year design unless different without power steering.

Not sure about the latter but this pic shows the correct bracket with power steering. Link has some other views that may help.

BurgundyJudge has the correct non-PS alternator bracket for 1970. Here's my manual steering '70 Tempest.

Update: I went to my local machine shop. It looks like this hole was never tapped when the head was made. This hole is shallower than the other holes and no sign of threads. My options are remove the head and the machine shop can repair the hole. But as my guy at the shop noted , if i have to take the head off for repair, I might as well just take the passenger head off and swap them since the "rear" of the passenger head's holes are fine. My last option if i don't want to swap heads is convert to power steering.

The power steering option has the added benefit of power steering! My question is whether the power steering bracket uses this hole? I couldn't find a diagram in my AIM for power steering but a diagram in Zazarine's resto book appears to show the power steering bracket using the hole my line points to and the hole at the 10 O'clock position. Can anyone confirm that?

Isn't this the hole that goes thru to the headbolt?? I would just remove the head bolt and tap it yourself. Don't need to remove the head. A little grease on the tap threads collects all the shavings. Pretty easy, just take your time and use a USA made tap...
