I have 2 .. 1970 Formulas i have original eng for 1 of them the other was purchased in 1982 by my friend it had a blown up SR 71 HO. 455 in it he took the heads sold me the rest..

Hi, Curiosity has the best of me. Mind if I ask how you can relate a serial to a particular car? I ask because I've had a 70 RA3 block since the late 80's in my garage and would LOVE to know what car it came in. Thanks, Andy

This is an easy one;

"N" indicates the Norwood Ohio assembly plant;
The only vehicle line at Norwood which could receive the Pontiac 400 'YS' engine is hte Firebird;
The only Firebird model that could get the 'YS' 400 was the Formula.
Period.

This engine was the "bread and butter" 400/4bbl engine that several models could receive, but as far as the Firebird was concerned:
The WT/YS "L78" engine was base on the Formula;
The WS/YZ "L74/RAIII" engine was base on the Trans Am - this was a step up from the "L78";
No 4bbl engine was available to the base or Esprit models.

I believe that you can get PHS paperwork for the car that your engine came ins, just by sending the partial vin code stamped on the engine to them.
I did just this the past calendar year for my 'YZ' and 'WT' engines (but both being Canadian cars, I got my paperwork from GM-Canada's 'Vintage Vehicle Services'; not available for non-Canadian ordered cars).
