Thanks for all the interest. I’m looking into it all. Need to figure out ability of the machine shop to make them in quantities and price points. Nobody wants to pay “Friends and Family”, “Venmo” etc. That means in Illinois I have to report it as income and that eats about 40%. I believe this would even raise the break even price to a level no one would want to pay.
I would love to move forward with this, but it might be better for the community for me to just share the CAD drawings and see if anyone runs with it. Still kicking all the options around. Thanks all, Stan. |

Hi everyone, I was working on this and had 2 issues, I had purchased 4 of those lifters(which were hard to find) and had the ford dogbones lifting up 20-30 thousandths when the lifter rode to the top of the lobe, (the round part of the lifter was hitting the flats on the bone) I was looking at welding something that was .050 to the dogbones to raise then, but never actually tried.
The other issue I had was the bottom of the lifter where the roller wheel is was a solid cylinder, and my cam lobe hit that part and actually lifted the lifter wheel off the lobe, I was considering just grinding a little off that edge of the lifters, (maybe .030 to .040)but had concerns with getting any shavings out of the lifter afterwords, I finally(2 months ago) just ordered Gaterman lifters which 2 different local machine shops recommended. I now have howards 1.65 roller rockers coming through Summit Racing. Then I can put this thing together and check for pushrod size. I still have to completely build the short block, including pistons to rods, It may be a while..... Frank |

Finally got 12 sets of bones made. I’m keeping 2 sets and have sold 5 sets on FB in the last 24 hours.
This is the first run and possibly last depending on how this goes. I know we aren’t supposed to sell in this spot, but there are people following this post that are interested. Hopefully the admin will let this fly for a bit so they can see it. I designed these and work with a local machine shop to make them. These are Pontiac only. They are designed to use the sealed power HT-2148 lifter. This is commonly referred to as the “LS7” lifter. The ones that fit correctly at least on my 73 455 are the ones in the pic below. There are fakes and some revisions to this number that have been found so I included a picture of what the oil hole MUST look like to work. This is for a set of 8 bones. Enough to do 1 V8. You will have to put the kit together using the Ford spider and source the correct lifters. This will require a cam with a lobe lift under .340”. It will still require careful measurements to ensure the lifter oil band doesn’t go too high or too low and come out of the lifter boss. If you know Teri Reed (Lady TaTa) she will vouch for me. They are $200 a set shipped in the lower 48. Either check, money order or PayPal Friends and Family. If you feel like you need to do goods and services, I have to up the price to $250. Thanks. Those look sweet. Thanks for doing this for our old engines.
Maybe it will help put a end to having to pay big bucks with big risk every time we want to go hyd roller. How much do these LS7 lifters cost ? |

The hard part is finding them. The actual LS lifter is different. You need to find the design in my picture. The give away is the oil hole.
These originally were for the 86-99 4.3, 5.0, and 5.7 Chevy roller motors. The first LS’s also used them. At some point they changed the oil hole location and those WILL NOT WORK. They are a little tricky to find. Stan. |

It would be really cool to create a list of cams that should work within the narrow oil band requirements. I think that would help long term if you could really put these into production.
Even if you don't necessarily sell the complete kit, just telling people what they needed to buy like you did with the lifter part numbers.

All,
PLEASE READ! I have reported my post (below) to be removed. I want to spend time measuring my setup again to get 100% verified factual data to be able to recommend dimensions. I posted based on my notes from over the last year and want to get fresh numbers. Using the lobe lift number alone is not going to be the right way to determine if the lifter will “work” It is determined by base circle for the lifter low point and base circle plus lobe lift for lifter high point. I can guarantee my .344 lobe lift fits excellent with the HT-2148 lifter in my 73 455 block. I’m attaching my cam card for reference. I can also say that if you have successfully ran the Ford bones, these will retrofit directly without issue. The issue is all about the lifter, not the bone. That cam card shows that it is ground on a small block “S” journal. The base circle is smaller than a typical Pontiac “B” journal. The “B “ journal will expose the top oil hole on a lot of blocks no matter what lift the cam has. To make the 2148 lifters work the cam should be ground on a small block journal, and have a max lift of .36” ish or less. A lot of people on here have “B” journal cams.

All,
My original intention was to make a bone to replace the Ford ones I bought based on this thread. That being said for anyone that has a running setup today with the Ford bones these will replace them with what I consider an upgrade. I put in the work measuring up my setup using a Com Cams XE276HR. I then worked with Lee Atkinson to come up with a cam with the base circle and other specs I wanted. TedRamAirII, If you sleeve the lifter bores, you can fix the oil band issues for sure, but the cost kind of makes this cost-effective solution expensive.... I'm documenting my setup in CAD so I can explain what I'm doing with pictures. Jay S, I agree. Trying to put the pieces together so folks can have a proven solution. About the lifter oil hole being exposed. On all cams (that I’ve seen), the nose of the cam is at the same height relative to the cam journal. That is about .010” below the cam journal radius (see pic of stock cam). (Can’t be higher than the journal or the cam wouldn’t fit into the block). So the lifter will rise to the same height regardless of lobe lift. The smaller the base circle, (more lobe lift), the more chances of the lifter oil hole being exposed at the bottom of the lifter bore.
Put another way, comparing two cams, one with .300 lobe lift, and one with .350 lobe lift. Both lifters will top out at the same place, but on the .350 cam the lifter starts out .050 lower in the lifter bore.

ALL,
I just measured out everything in my setup so people can reference for their own purposes. Once again, this is with MY BLOCK You can see the lifters work well. My cam measures.... Base Circle 1.191 Lobe Lift .344 Journal Diameter 1.899 This means my lobe is .010 under the journal radius as expected. One caveat!...... THE OIL HOLE IN THE LIFTER NEEDS TO FACE THE OIL HOLE IN THE BOSS THE GET OILING ON THE BASE CIRCLE! PM me if you want a copy of the DWG file. Last edited by Stan65; 12-01-2024 at 04:19 PM. |

You might try Howard’s also. Gaterman makes some lifters for Howard’s. I think the one of the Howard’s part number that are Gaterman lifters is 91174. I am not sure which # interchanges directly.
