MacOS is based on Linux (or more generically speaking, BSD UNIX). UNIX was designed from the ground up to be an efficient, multitasking operating system, and is the primary workhorse in the scientific community. Microsoft spent a lot of time making sure that each version of Windows was backward compatible with DOS until version 10 or 11. But they haven't evolved to be the elegant solution that UNIX (and MacOs) is. That's why your Windows box seems to slow down while it's downloading virus definitions in the background, yet a Mac doesn't. It's multitasking, pure and simple.

The are particularly greedy and not consumer friendly in that regard. Cook said he was finally going to open up imassage but it has been over a year already.

Annoying if anyting. Skype, WhatsApp, FB work on any platform.

Unix was designed in the 60s and hardly modern. IOS is a different animal.

Windows is backwards compatible for a reason. The software development industry and businesses depend on it. There is also huge device driver support for peripherals that give the system an advantage - choice.
