Well since the V8 is two V4s in the same block then something out of the norm might be getting investigated.

Hey there, new to the site so apologies if this repeating. I’m working with a fabricator to develop an adapter plate for a modern transmission (think 6L-10L) for my 1968 firebird. I wa going to do an LS swap in the thing as I won it in an auction. I get it home and it’s numbers matching. Nostalgia in me wants to keep the Pontiac engine but I still want to modernize. Oh, and the current trans is a powerglide. I’ve worked out the controller problem through upgrading to EFI, now it’s getting the adapter fabricated. To wit, I can send a bunch of parts to the CNC folks, or I can send drawings. Does anyone have CAD drawings of the Pontiac/BOP back of engine? Ideally I can nab the full suite of transmissions too.

I know I could just buy a TCI 6X , drop in a 4Lxx, or go a TH350 and gear vendors but I still wanna have some fun shoehorning a modern transmission on a vintage, albeit updated, engine.

Thanks!

My 409 buddy in Dallas Pat Lobb has 409 block blueprints that are as big as a conference table 4-5 feet long! He got from someone back in the day. It even had the codes for the letters used for "fitted blocks" and the different sized pistons.

I have a 455 block that has similar fitted piston letters on the deck.

Before you go to the trouble of making one, give these guys a call on the chance that they already have one or can make one. All they make is engine/transmission adapters, and they have the hole patterns for just about everything so they could probably make one easily.

Although they don't specifically list the Pontiac V8, I'd be surprised if they didn't have the hole pattern. Worth a try.

The transmissions you refer to have a chevy bell pattern which is the same as a 4L80E. The adapters are rather cheap to go from a BOP engine bell pattern engine, to a chevy bell pattern transmission. No need to re-invent the wheel.

Link to Jegs: https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/60172/10002/-1

Many people don't know that the 2 lowest bolts, and the pilot dowel locations on chevy and BOP patterns are in exactly the same position. The upper bolts are the only ones that don't match up. The adapter I linked to matches the upper holes up, the 2 lower holes already match up and just require a bolt to pass through the adapter plate and screw into the block.

BTW, the original 2 speed transmission in your car isn't a powerglide, it's a turbine 300, many times mistakenly called a powerglide. The two transmissions share little, to no common parts.

Im not sure if these years bolt patterns are the same as newer blocks but Im pretty sure I used these measurements to make a fixture to hold my 73 400 block.

Yes to the above.
The ass end of a Pontiac block has never changed.

From 1964 and up this is true.

1955-1960 was different and 1961-1963 was different as well. These early engines used 7/16-14 bolts to attach the bellhousing until 1964 when they started using 3/8-16 hardware.

Pontiac didn’t finalize their design for a while after the inception of the V8, the same goes for cylinder head to intake bolt patterns (1955-1960 and 1961-1964) that were finalized in 1965.

Correct.

We had a guy on here who had the blueprints to make an adapter from early to later.
(Gavin I think)

I have a pdf of them and had them on my site. (probably still there if find the link)
