I picked up a 1974 Grand Prix Model J in late November and tucked it away in the back of my heated storage building 30 minutes before the snow started falling. This last week I was able to get it on a lift and get a close look at what i purchased! The car has 63,300 miles on it and from the paperwork I found it had only 2,000 miles in the last 10 years. The power steering pump and water pump were leaking bad and have been replaced and I am waiting on exhaust manifolds to redo the exhaust.

Several things I did find that will need attention before I take to the roads - rear wheel cylinders need replacing due to leakage, the master cylinder also leaks into the power booster so I will need to replace the master cylinder and power booster as well as the wheel cylinders at the same time. I purchase most of my parts through NAPA and have been for the last 45 years, our local store always had parts for my 1972 Trans am on the shelf 40 years ago when other stores in the area would have to "get from their warehouse". I have been advised that they may not be the best source for the master cylinder (poor luck with their rebuilt units for older cars lately according to the owner). From outside sources I have heard little good about any of the rebuilt power boosters from any of the typical parts stores. I have not replaced a power booster for 10 years, I am still running the NAPA one on my 1978 square body Camper Special with no issues that I put on then.

What I would like to know is who has had good luck with what brand of master cylinder and brake booster. I have used In-Line Tube for many years for pre-bent brake and fuel lines, front disc brake conversion on a mid-1960's B body, transmission lines on newer trucks and the list goes on. I see they have a master cylinder for the Grand Prix but no booster. Same with Ames, master cylinder but no booster. I will most likely get a booster to get me through the summer while I send of the original to be rebuilt by Brake Booster Restoration but they take 6-8 months from what I understand.

I found one on ebay that says it will fit. I've purchased some things from them for my 72 GP and had pretty good luck. Hopefully this link works. Maybe they have one that isn't chrome.
