Does the roller on the 3rd lifter with the axle part way out have the bearing out or does it spin yet?
If the bearings were not what failed and the axle crimps let go there was nothing you could have done different to prevent that. That would be a mfg defect. As far as I recall all the companies that make HR lifters use that same style of crimp to hold the axles in. Except Morel, but only after around 2015, they have clips like a SR lifter. Before that they had that crimp style axle lock also. The Johnson lifters with the PR at the end of the part number is not considered a short travel. They call it a limited travel. That piston really took a hit. OOF… Last edited by Jay S; 04-29-2025 at 12:43 PM. |

Have you thought about sending that piston to Ross/Butler for eval? A touch of blending still "might" be useable

The reason I mentioned that was I didn't want to discourage anyone from buying Johnson Hyd Roller lifters because they are an excellent product. Not sure what happened to mine but if it was a manufacturing defect it was from a long time ago.

For one thing the damage is right inline with the wrist pin. This is a high stress area when the piston changes direction. It was hit hard enough that I am unable to rotate the wrist pin with my fingers. I'm sure it could be honed but was it weakened because of the deformation? I don't know and not sure I want to take that chance.

You can if you buy from the right place. We've offered this service for years

If the pin is pinched then the ring lands are off kilter also.
Even if the pin hole could be honed your not going to be able to do anything about the ring lands.

When I needed one piston 8 years ago I called Ross directly and they would not make one piston and I had to buy a set of four. Maybe they have changed their policy since or have a different policy for distributors who sell a lot for them.

There's really no reason today why any of them shouldn't make an individual piston without having to buy four. I'd think a shop with massive buying power could arrange that in the terms of their contract.... If they wanted to. |

That would be nice.

I would think Butler Performance would certainly have some clout with Ross. But, I had to order 4 pistons to get one and a L O N G lead time too.

I set these heads up myself so I was pretty sure spring pressures and coil bind were good. I just double checked one intake and one exhaust valve. PAC Beehive Springs, spring pressure were set up per Johnson's recommendations.
Lunati Cam dur @ .050 219/227 lift at .050 .515/.530 Intake seat 190 open 384 coil bind .152 Exhaust seat 190 open 392 coil bind .133

190# seat? Is that typing error?
Should be 135# ish with a beehive and that cam |

Was looking at that as well. My heads were setup for .593 lift with Johnson ST's 145 on the seat and around 360 open. Pac 1903's.

I'm seeing it as 190 seat 384/392 open.... But we all went to different schools

Yeah not worded how I would interpret it, that's why there's a question mark on that sentence, must be a southern thing
![]() If it's the other way around 190 on the seat is quite a bit more than I use on Hydraulic rollers, even on a BBC that has one of the heaviest valvetrains among engine brands. Pontiacs aren't exactly light valvetrain either and typically use more spring pressure than say a SBC for example. I'm personally not overly alarmed at those numbers if that's what they are. Paul spec'd a spring for dad's Pontiac at around 150 seat pressure and 400 open. The most recent SBC I built was 140 on the seats and around 360 open. Intake seat 190, open 384, coil bind .152 Exhaust seat 190, open 392, coil bind .133 I see it like Paul. I put a comma between.

Whoops!!! I made a big mistake with my calculation. My micrometer has a step of .135 on the top and the beehive retainer fits inside the step instead of on top as a normal size retainer would. After considering for the .135 step my spring pressure comes in looking much better.
on the seat 154 and open 356 exh and 340 intake
