Honestly, I think the best advice in this thread has been to do what you are going to be able to accept. There is a time and place for all sorts of techniques. If the panel area has a boatload of beads rolled in it, maybe flanging wont work well. On the other hand, if you arent going to be able to grind flat on the bottom because the frame is in the way, maybe a butt weld is a waste since you cant make it pretty.
