I am rebuilding the brake drums on my 68 GTO and when stripping them down the self adjusting setup has been removed which means manual adjustment which is ok.
I have the self adjusting components along with the general rebuild kit, both from Ames.
I note that Ames advise the self adjusting rod in the kit is not suitable and you need to re-use the original.
Given I don’t have the original, can you modify the rod in the kit to make it work if installing the kit, or is it easier to just not install the self adjusting setup?

I can not answer your question directly. However, Rock Auto shows hardware kits and self adjuster kits from 7 different vendors. All the links look similar in the little pictures. I would be inclined to mock it up with the parts you have on hand and see if it all makes sense as far as function. It is a rather simple system. If it doesn't seem to go together in a logical fashion, modify as needed at that point. Another possible source is a factory service manual. They generally have an exploded view and an assembled view of the drum brakes. Possibly a call to Ames might shed some light on what the problem is with the supplied link.

All sorted, spoke with Ames and all good for rear drums with the parts they sent.
Have fitted them on the rear and no issues.
