1971 Pontiac GTO for Sale $49,500
Located in SE Indiana near Cincinnati, Dayton, Indianapolis. I have lots of additional pictures. PM if interested. I purchased this car from a member of this forum in April 2021. Unfortunately for me, I injured my back and am unable to continue in the Pontiac hobby. This was originally a California car its entire life until it was shipped to Indiana via an enclosed car hauler from Reliable Carriers, Inc. It has been covered in a temperature-controlled garage since I have owned it. Overall, the car is VERY nice, but is still a 54 year old car and is not perfect. There were only 9,497 hardtop GTO’s built in 1971 and it is possible that only about 2,000 still exist today which makes this car relatively rare. While I have modified the driveline to suite my likes, I have ALL the original parts if someone wanted to put it all back to original components. It retains its numbers matching engine and I have the original carb, transmission, differential, wheels, and other miscellaneous parts. This car looks and runs great with plenty of power. Jeff Kauffman of KRE states that this combination should be good for 500-525HP and 560-580 lb-ft of torque from 2500-5500 RPM. It runs and pulls very well. I drove it 440 miles round trip to the Ames Pontiac show in Norwalk, OH last year and it got 17 MPG on the interstate! I have over $25k in all the new parts that were installed on the car and have all the pictures and receipts as well. The car has about 127,275 miles on it and the driveline has around 1,500 miles since the rebuild and startup on 11/4/2023. There are so many new parts on this car it is hard to mention them all. Exterior This car was completely restored by the previous owner. New quarter panels and window to trunk filer panels. Correct Canyon Copper paint and clear coat. Paint is really nice. The hood is rust free. Interior The interior features all new seat covers, headliner, and carpeting in the correct Sienna color. Engine The engine is a 463 cu.in. bored and stroked original 400 block with as-cast KRE D-port heads, roller rockers, HR230 roller cam, Johnsons roller lifters, and original intake manifold. All fasteners are ARP and the block machine work was done by KRE. All parts were purchased through KRE and the rotating assembly has been balanced. The carburetor is a 1977 800 CFM Buick unit that has been properly calibrated and rebuilt including an electric choke. All carb parts spec’d and purchased from Cliff’s High Performance Q-jets. The fuel pump is a mechanical RobbMc unit that is good for 550HP. The distributor is the original points unit that has been updated with new weights, springs, and BOP composite gear for the roller cam. Other BOP parts include the 1-piece rear main seal, one-piece oil pan gasket, valve covers, and rubber valve cover gaskets. The engine ran Driven 10w-40 startup oil for the initial startup and was driven 200 miles before the oil was swapped to 10w-40 Driven Hot Rod oil. Driveline The entire driveline is new. The car was converted from an automatic to Tremec TKX 5 speed using the SilverSport Transmission kit with hydraulic clutch. The rear end is a Quick Performance Ford 9” with 3.50:1 gears, 11” disc brakes, parking brake, and clutch type posi rated up to 650HP with a new driveshaft. The wheels are from YearOne and are 17x9 with 5-1/8” backspacing wrapped with 275/40-17” Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 performance tires. It has a reproduction cold air intake from The Parts Place that makes the hood air inlets functional. Suspension The front springs are new from Coil Spring Specialties and are 25% stiffer than stock with a ¾” drop. The rears are original with air bags. The front suspension has been completely rebuilt using Moog parts and a Lares power steering box with 10:1, 2.5 turn lock-to-lock power steering unit. The front sway bar is the original 1-1/8” unit. The rear has a QA1, 1” sway bar, tubular bracing mounts, and adjustable upper control arms with the original boxed lower arms. Exhaust The exhaust has Hedman ceramic coated short tubular headers, Remflex header gaskets, full 2-1/2” RARE exhaust with X-pipe and AP Technologies 24” XLerator XS1266 mufflers. Issues • The a/c compressor went out, so a new unit with new oil was installed, but the R-12 system was not charged. It worked prior to the compressor quitting. • The speedometer quit working and I have been keeping track of the mileage via an electronic phone speedometer app ever since. I had a gauge cluster completely rebuilt by Precision Pontiac as well as purchasing a reproduction tach but can’t install it. • Heater core went out and I purchased a new kit, but again, I can’t install it due to my back issues.
