I know a guy here that keeps telling me about a 421SD engine with Tri power carbs, the bell housing clutch and Muncy 4speed. The complete setup just needs to be lowered into the engine bay, hook up the wiring and everything else and drive way. It's been setting on 2 pallets for the last 10 years or so. Every once in a while he pulls the plugs and sprays fogging oil into the cylinders and spins the the engine. He's a dam good mechanic I've been told. Now he's thinkin gf selling it as he doesn't have a use for it now like the thought he'd would back in the past.
Now he wants me to make an offer for it. And guarantees it will run. I've made one but it might not be enough, but he's thinking about it. Money's tight right now.

What's a good guess for an offer?

BTW, he started out by calling it a Big Block Pontiac engine. I told him it wasn't but he had to argue about it. Then the next day he apologized. He said he looked it up on the internet and found out I was right. Miracles never cease to happen.

Or at least without casting numbers for the block and heads and the engine code stamped on the block.

Probably a common 389 Tri-Power. Hope I’m wrong. 421 SD engines have dual quads or a single NASCAR 4-barrel. Could also be a ‘63 -‘66 421 HO Tri-Power, great engine but not on the level of the legendary 421 SD.

After all, it was a big block Pontiac in his eyes.

Again, without any substantial information about it value is anyone’s guess.

Get the number on the center ports of the heads.Also see if it has the transfer lug on the pass side rear of the block.Tom

Realize you said it is unseen currently ,,, but definitely perform complete due diligence.

Parts get mixed and matched
All 421's were SuperDuty BigBlocks outside of Pontiac circles.

TriPower and Muncie are 2 more red flags against originality.
But there might be something right about it in some capacity.

If you ask him for the head codes and block code , and he says okay where are they ... not a good sign of authenticity .

No, this guy is no dummy. He bought the engine right out of the car, then junked the the car as it was beyond restoring. It's an all original restored unit. He's very was anal about all of this setup when he restored it. Just as he is with stuff he's working on now. But I'll see it and get the info from him next week. I've got to work tomorrow but I'll have several days off due to rain from Friday night thru to next Wednesday.

Jamesq, I don't think it would have been a BW T-10 4-speed in it. I do know some Pontiacs had them but I was told at one time it was the Canadian cars. How true that was, I've no idea.

Check this link. I think it's for BW T-10s. It does show T-10s for Pontiac 1957 up to 1963. A friend of mine has a 61 Catalina Royal Bobcat and it has a 4-speed Muncy in it. As far as I know, original to the car.

Bart, I'll have more information next week. I'm just asking what it could be worth. I'm not selling it. I do know it should be worth more than what I'm paying for it. Whether it's a SD or HO engine. It can have 3-2bbl carbs, dual 4s, or a single 4 on it from what the Dealer's 1966 brochure says.

The one I bought is out of a 66 2+2. They had the Muncy in them.
I will be able to see the complete setup on Monday morning. I would have seen it today but I had to work.

This white 2+2 is the exact same car a friend in college back in 1970 had. Color and all. And he had the tri-power carbs on the 421.

As for the Royal Bobcat, I believe they put in the Muncy to their specs, not Pontiac's.

Should probably brush up real good on how to identify 64 to 66 421 blocks and heads before you go.

What started out as a big block super duty , might be a 389 garden variety with TriPower slapped on it by a previous owner.

If you get lucky and it is a 421 HO from 1964-66 , those had the big long header type exhaust manifolds and an angled oil filter mount/adapter.
And GTO spec heads.

The 4bbl and regular TriPower 421 had log manifolds with a straight oil filter mount , and basic heads in 65-66.

A lot of old timers call the 3.25 main a big block and a 3.00 a small block. Same crew that calls it a RAM Iv and RAM V dropping the “AIR “

They also usually pre date the black or brown leather vest with a GTO patch on it crowd. ;-)
